SEATTLE – Behind four ranked victories on the night, the No. 5 Florida Gators (7-2) defeated the No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs (6-3), 4-2, on the final day of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships consolation round in the Seattle Tennis Center. With this win, the Gators went 2-1 at the tournament, collecting a couple of top-10 wins in the process.
Florida was off to a strong start, claiming the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches.
At court three, Georgia would have a slight advantage over Florida as Erik Grevelius and Blake Croyder defeated Abedallah Shelbayh and Duarte Vale, 6-1.
But, the Gators clawed back and won the remaining two matches to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 44 pairing of Andy Andrade and Mattias Siimar won the next doubles match with a 6-4 victory over the No. 50 duo of Philip Henning and Trent Bryde.
At court one, the No. 54 tandem of Tristan McCormick and Hamish Stewart took a 5-4 lead over Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton. The Gator duo continued to fight as they tied the match, 5-5. In the final game, the Bulldogs were looking to bring the match into a tiebreak, taking a 30-love lead over Riffice and Shelton. The Gators were able to hold serve, though, and come back to win the match by a score of 7-5 and take the doubles point.
Just like yesterday's contest against No. 7 Virginia, the Gators only needed three more singles wins to secure a victory.
No. 121-ranked freshman Nate Bonetto was the first to give Florida another point in singles play after downing Miguel Perez Pena in straight sets at court six, 6-2, 6-4.
Andrade followed with a top-25 win of his own and second ranked victory in consecutive days after defeating No. 23 Bryde by two scores of 6-3 at court four.
Georgia got two points back at courts one and five after No. 19 Stewart took the match from No. 92 Riffice, 7-6 (5), 6-2, and No. 104 Croyder beat No. 33 Siimar, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Two more matches remained on courts two and three, with Florida needing just one more point to clinch the match.
On court three, Vale was in a battle with No. 101 McCormick, looking to force a third set with an even 5-5 second set.
Again, like last night, it was No. 3 Shelton who provided the last punch. Shelton took on No. 25 Henning and forced the Bulldog into three sets. Henning won the first set in a breaker, 7-6 (5), but Shelton fought back to claim the second set by a decisive 6-2 score. The Gator then clinched the match after a 6-2 third set for his 10th ranked victory of the season.
