BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the first time in his career, Nate Bonetto snagged the SEC Freshman of the Week honor, announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the second time this season that a Gator collected a conference honor as Mattias Siimar was named SEC Player of the Week on Jan. 26.
Bonetto picked up a key win in Florida's match against the No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The Bend, Ore., native increased the Gators' lead over the Bulldogs, 2-0, when he won his match at court six in straight sets, defeating UGA's Miguel Perez Pena, 6-2, 6-4.
The freshman's victory helped propel Florida to their second top-10 victory in just as many days.
Bonetto, who is ranked No. 121 in ITA's singles rankings, holds an impressive 16-3 singles record on the year, while ranking second on the team in singles victories. He has a perfect 3-0 dual match singles record and also holds an undefeated 3-0 record against nationally ranked opponents.
The Gators are set to open conference play at home as the No. 6 South Carolina Gamecocks come to Gainesville on Friday, March 4 at 5 p.m.
