GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida women's tennis was locked-in on a rainy Wednesday morning, taking down UAB in convincing fashion, 7-0, for their second complete7-0 sweep of the season.
The Gators (10-4, 2-2 SEC) got creative with their doubles lineup on Wednesday morning, with each team looking different from their previous matches. At two doubles, Carly Briggs and Emma Shelton made quick work of Adela Wasserbauerova and Mackenzie White, downing the duo, 6-1.
Momentum remained in the Gators' favor throughout the rest of doubles, as Alicia Dudeney and McCartney Kessler took care of business on court one, defeating UAB's (9-6, 1-0 CUSA) Sydney Clarke and Maggie White, 6-3. On court three, Sara Dahlstrom and Bente Spee completed the doubles sweep for UF, defeating Alexandra da Silva and Annalisa Smith, 6-2.
In singles competition, the Orange & Blue were rolling throughout the day. At the two singles slot, Shelton was victorious in a quick 6-1, 6-2 match to push the Florida lead to 2-0. Freshman Alicia Dudeney, playing her first match at the top singles position, earned the third win for the Gators. After falling in the first set, 2-6, the United Kingdom native bounced back with two dominant sets, both ending at 6-1, to give the home squad a three-game cushion.
Briggs played clincher on Wednesday morning, securing the match for UF on court three. The junior found herself in a battle in the opening set, having to fight back from a 3-5 hole to eventually take the first set, 7-6(4). There was no such drama in set two, with Briggs racing to a match victory, 6-2.
The victories didn't end there for the Gators, with Dahlstrom putting on a convincing 6-2, 6-2 performance over Jana Hecking at four singles. Her doubles teammate, Spee, holding a 4-2 lead in the first, went down after a hard-fought point. Refusing to give up, Spee went on to win the first set 6-3, and rolled through the second set, 6-0, to make it 6-0 in favor of UF.
With just one match remaining to secure the sweep, Sydney Berlin did everything she could to ensure that Gators blanked the Blazers. The senior dropped her opening set, 3-6, but didn't let that deter her, fighting back for a 6-3 second set victory. Since the match had already been clinched for Florida, Berlin and her opponent, White, battled in a 10-point tiebreaker, which Berlin won in convincing fashion at 10-2, giving Florida a 7-0 victory.
Florida's focus now returns to Southeastern Conference play, as the Gators travel to Columbia, Mo., for a 3 p.m. ET matchup on Friday with the Missouri Tigers.

On his thoughts regarding Wednesday's match…
"I was really happy to see Mark (Tjia), you know he was our volunteer assistant here about a decade ago and did such a great job for us and I was really impressed by how hard his team played, it was really good for us. We had to problem-solve on a lot of courts and that's a great thing to have right in the middle of SEC season where we were able to put some different pairings together. Overall, I'm really pleased, I think we fought well and played at a high level, so today was a great day for the Gators."
On the women moving up the lineup and taking care of business…s
"I think we're still improving, really. Every week or so we make some big steps forward and these matches, when we have these, they just provide another opportunity for them, individually in particular, to learn and try some new things. I though Lissy (Alicia Dudeney), as a freshman, playing one today is not easy. After a somewhat shaky first set, she was clean as a whistle and Emma (Shelton) at two was all business. She hit the ball huge, so overall I was really pleased."
