Thursday, March 17, 2022 | Track and Field
NEW ORLEANS, La. – After winning a national championship on Saturday, the Florida women took home a clean sweep of the South Region Indoor Track and Field Awards as announced by the USTFCCCA on Thursday afternoon.
These awards purely reflect performances from the past indoor season.
Grace Stark (Women's Track Athlete of the Year), Jasmine Moore (Women's Field Athlete of the Year), Mike Holloway (Women's Coach of the Year) and Nic Petersen (Women's Assistant Coach of the Year) were all named winners of their respective awards after voting by coaches and USTFCCCA members.
Stark ran a dominate weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships, scoring 15 team points for the Gators. The White Lake, Mich. native won the NCAA Championship in the 60-meter hurdles after matching the collegiate record (7.78) in the finals of the event. In the prelims of the 60 meters, she ran a personal best 7.10 in the before coming back with a 7.13 in the finals to take fourth place.
She lowered both of her school-record marks in the 60-meter hurdles and 60 meters and became the first Florida woman to win the NCAA title in the 60 hurdles. Her NCAA-record time means the Gators now hold the collegiate records in the men's and women's 60-meter hurdles (Grant Holloway).
Stark is just the third Florida athlete (Charlotte Browning, 2010 and Cory McGee, 2014) to be named South Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year during the indoor season since the award began in 2006.
Moore continued her tremendous indoor season by closing it out with a pair of national championships. The Grand Prairie, Texas native swept both the Long Jump (6.57m) and the Triple Jump (14.57m) enroute to her first collegiate national titles.
Her mark of 14.57m on her first attempt in the Triple Jump was good enough to break her own NCAA record and secure the title with room to spare. She became the first woman in NCAA Indoor Track and Field history to win conference and national titles in the Long Jump and Triple Jump in the same season.
This is her second South Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year award but her first as a member of the Gators. She joins Yanis David (2019) and Mariam Kevkhishvili (2009) as Florida athletes to win the award during the indoor season.
Holloway earned his 10th National Championship as head coach on Saturday but just his first as the woman's head coach. The Gators scored 68 team points despite missing key members and scratching from the 4x400 relay after securing the team title.
This is Holloway's 8th South Region Coach of the Year honor in the indoor season (4 Men, 4 Women).
He became just the 6th head coach in Division I Track and Field history to win 10 team titles. Holloway is also just one of two black coaches in Division I history to accomplish that feat.
This is Petersen's third Regional Women's Assistant Coach of the Year honor and his second at Florida. He also won the award as the jumps coach at TCU in 2012. The Florida jumps squad scored 30 combined team points in the Long Jump and Triple Jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Highlighted by Moore's victories in both events, the Gators also got points from Natricia Hooper (2nd Place, Triple Jump) and Claire Bryant (7th Place, Long Jump). At the SEC Championships, 34 of Florida's 97 team points came in the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
No school has won more NCAA Women's Indoor National Championships in the Triple Jump than Florida (5) with three of those winners being coached by Petersen.
Florida's national championship was just the second by the women in program history and the first in 30 years. The Gators won five individual titles, just the second time in history a women's team has accomplished that feat at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
