GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 1 Florida Gators remain undefeated at home and improve their win streak to 12 after quickly overpowering the No. 41 Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday afternoon, winning the match by a 6-1 score at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators (17-2, 9-0 SEC) took two of the three doubles matches from the Commodores (14-8, 2-7 SEC) to claim their twelfth-straight doubles point and go out to an early 1-0 lead.
The No. 11-ranked duo of Ben Shelton and Sam Riffice had a dominant outing over No. 80-ranked Siim Troost and Michael Ross to win at court one. The Florida tandem took an early 4-1 lead, but the Commodore pair won two games in a row to cut into the lead, 4-3. The Gator duo bounced back and broke serve to go up 5-3, then carried that momentum into the next game to win the match, 6-3. This win marks the 10th overall win for the pair as they are 6-2 against nationally-ranked opponents.
After being tied 3-3, the No. 27-ranked veteran doubles pair of Andy Andrade and Mattias Siimar won three consecutive games to defeat Vanderbilt's George Harwell and Max Freeman, 6-3. Andrade and Siimar advance to 13-2 in the dual season, 8-0 against conference opponents and extend their win streak to five.
On court three, Nate Bonetto and Duarte Vale were up on Macsen Sisam and Jeremie Casabon, 5-4, when the doubles point was clinched.
The Gators kept the momentum going in singles as they won five of their first six sets.
Vanderbilt tied the match, 1-1, after collecting a win at court six, but that was the only point the SEC foe would get in the competition.
No. 120 Josh Goodger cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Casabon on court five to extend the Gators' lead to 2-0.
No. 1 Shelton was second on the board for the Gators with a straight-set win at court one. Taking on No. 44 Harwell, Shelton picked up his 12th-consecutive singles victory with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Florida then went up 4-1 with No. 98-ranked Vale's victory over Marcus Ferreira on court three. After taking his first set by a 6-3 score, the senior captain started the following set with a 1-1 tie against the Commodore. Vale would not let Ferreira win another game as the Gator won in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1, to clinch his second match in a row.
After an impressive performance at court four, No. 93-ranked Andrade pushed his season singles win total to 22. The Bradenton, Fla., native cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set against Freeman. In a back-and-forth second set, Andrade gained a late 5-4 lead after being tied, then went on to win his match by a score of 6-1, 6-4, giving the Gators their fifth point.
No. 26 Riffice sealed the deal for the Gators and led the majority of his match to collect a 6-3, 6-2 win over Joubert Klopper. This marks the senior's 10th-consecutive singles victory as he remains 10-0 at No. 2 singles.
