Florida Opens Postseason with SEC Outdoor Championships
Tuesday, May 10, 2022 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The NCAA Track and Field postseason is finally upon us after a regular season filled with collegiate records and incredible performances.
The Florida men's and women's track and field programs begin their postseason journey this week with the SEC Outdoor Championships on the campus of Ole Miss.
The premier collegiate conference meet will feature four of the top five ranked teams and eight ranked programs overall on both the men's and women's sides.
Florida comes into the week as the No. 3 team in the country in both the men's and women's rankings and begins the quest for a first outdoor conference title since the Gators swept the team titles in 2018.
The Gators were runner-up in both the men's and women's team races at the SEC Indoor Championships in late February.
Action in Oxford begins Thursday afternoon and will end Saturday night with the men's 4x400 relay.
Men:
The No. 3 Florida Men's Track and Field team enters the conference meet on the back of a strong regular season in the sprints and relays.
Florida brings the top 4x100 (38.47) and 4x400 times (2:58.53) in the nation into Oxford along with the co-collegiate leader in the 200 meters, Joseph Fahnbulleh (19.92).
During the indoor season, the Gators tallied 44 points across the three sprints events (60m, 200m, 400m) before grabbing eight points in the 4x400 relay to close out the meet.
The Gators will look to replicate that success at the outdoor meet this week. Florida will contest six athletes in the 100 meters, six in the 200 meters and five in the 400 meters.
Florida will also have a full array of options to fill its 4x100 and 4x400 teams on Saturday afternoon.
Joseph Fahnbulleh, Dedrick Vanover, Cameron Mahorn, Kemuel Santana and Tyler Davis are expected to contest multiple races and be among the available athletes for selection to run the relays as well.
Fahnbulleh is coming off a meet which saw him match the NCAA lead in the 200 meters (19.92) at the LSU Invitational. He has also run a personal best of 10.15 in the 100 meters at the Tom Jones Memorial and has anchored the Gators' 4x100 team throughout the season.
Jacory Patterson helped break the collegiate record in the 4x400 relay earlier this season when he, Ryan Willie, Jacob Miley and Champion Allison crossed the line in 2:58.53, becoming the first sub-2:59.00 relay team in collegiate history.
Willie, Allison and Patterson are expected to be big point-scorers in the 400 meters. Allison won the SEC title during the indoor season while Willie and Patterson finished 4th and 5th at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
During the outdoor season, the Discus and Javelin are among the 21 contested events at postseason meets, bringing additional strength to the Florida lineup.
Mark Porter and Zach Godbold are enjoying great success in the Javelin this season, each posting top-8 SEC marks throughout the regular season.
Edward Shelikoff will enter into the discus where he has been a force all season.
Caleb Foster, PJ Austin and Malcolm Clemons are set to enter the Long Jump with Jonathan Miller and MJ Holloway among the entries in the Triple Jump.
The Gators will contest 14 of the 21 events at the SEC Outdoor Championships with 29 athletes scheduled to compete.
Women:
The No. 3 Florida Women's Track and Field team has continued its outstanding 2022 campaign after capturing the NCAA Indoor National Championship in March.
The Gators, behind a strong roster of elite talent, have only solidified their case to be among the favorites at any postseason meet they contest.
As has been the case all season, Florida will bring a heavy presence into the horizontal jumps.
The Gators have the top-two collegiate marks in the Triple Jump behind a pair of 14-plus meter performances from Natricia Hooper and Jasmine Moore.
Along with Alissa Braxton, Florida boasts three of the top eight marks in the SEC entering the weekend.
In the Long Jump, the Gators have tallied three top-six collegiate marks this year with Moore, Anna Hall and Claire Bryant all in the top four of the SEC this season as well.
Moore swept the horizontal jumps at the conference and national level during the indoor season and is among the favorites to grab gold medals at the SEC Outdoor Championships.
After winning the U.S. title in the Heptathlon at the USATF Combined Events Championships, Hall will get the week off the Heptathlon and turn her focus to the 400-meter hurdles and Long Jump.
Florida's lone entry in the Heptathlon, Sterling Lester, will enter the meet with the best mark in the conference, of athletes contesting the event. She tallied 5616 points at the Texas Relays in March and will look to win her first career conference title in the combined events.
Grace Stark and Talitha Diggs will be busy among multiple events this weekend.
Diggs will run the 200m/400m double with hopes to score points across both events. The Saucon Valley, Pa. native was third in the 400 meters at the SEC Indoor Championships and fourth in the 200 meters.
She closed out her outstanding indoor season with the National Championship in the 400 meters.
After going 2-for-2 in titles during the indoor season in the 60-meter hurdles, Stark comes into the week in search of a first conference outdoor title in the hurdles.
She will contest both the 100 meters and 100-meter hurdles against a bevy of SEC talent.
Imogen Barrett comes into the weekend in fine form this season. She is set to run the 800m/1500m double. She was third indoors in the 800 meters and was the 2019 SEC Outdoor Champion in the 1500 meters.
The Gators have won back-to-back conference titles in the 1500 meters (Imogen Barrett – 2019, Gabrielle Wilkinson – 2021).
Vanessa Watson (400mH), Parker Valby (5000m), Gabrielle Wilkinson (800m), Vasileia Spyrou (1500m) and Taylor Manson (400m) are among a long list of additional contenders to score points for the Gators this weekend.
Thea Jensen will be the lone athlete in the throws for Florida, contesting the Shot Put and Discus this weekend.
Florida tallied 97 points at the indoor conference meet enroute to a runner-up finish.
The Gators will contest 16 of 21 events with 21 athletes scheduled to compete.
