GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida men's tennis head coach Bryan Shelton has announced the signing of Tanapatt Nirundorn to join the Gators next season. Nirundorn is one of the top juniors in the world, ranking as high as No. 46 in the ITF Junior Rankings this year.
During the fall, Nirundorn won two ITF J3 singles titles. Starting with the ITF J3 Montreal tournament, Nirundorn rolled through his competition en route to a singles title after defeating all of his opponents in straight sets, while only allowing his competition in the semifinals and finals to win five total games.
A few weeks later, the newly signed Gator would continue to dominate his opponents at the ITF J3 Pune tournament, where he won his second singles title. Nirundorn never lost a set in each of his matches leading up to the finals, where he eventually took on No. 1-seed and ITF top-50-ranked junior player, Woobin Shin. An opponent he is familiar with as the two have paired up for a few doubles tournaments, Nirundorn was able to battle back after dropping the first set to claim the title in three.
Most recently, the Gator was a singles quarterfinalist in the M15 Chiang Rai tournament, defeating ATP No. 776 and ITF No. 106 player Jumpei Yamasaki and Geun Jun Kim in the first and second rounds, respectively.
In addition to his singles titles, Nirundorn has been extremely successful in doubles play on the ITF circuit. Winning 15 ITF doubles championships over his career, the Gator will help give Florida a big advantage in doubles.
Nirundorn has won the doubles titles in tournaments such as JA Cape Town, JB1 Pune and J1 Nonthaburi. Back in January, Nirundorn also teamed up with ITF No. 38 junior, Jaden Weekes, and made it all the way to the semifinals of the Australia Open Junior Championships.
"We are so excited to have T join our Gator family," Shelton said. "T has become one of the very best juniors in the game and he still has so much room to grow. T's unique skill set is what caught our eye initially, but to learn about his character and love for the game made him the perfect fit for us. T has the game to make his opponents uncomfortable, which will serve the Gators well! I can't wait to have him here this coming fall!"
