Kessler Dominant in Opening Round of NCAA Singles Championship
Monday, May 23, 2022 | Women's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Florida women's tennis standout McCartney Kessler was dominant on Monday afternoon in the NCAA Singles Championship, taking down San Diego's No. 45 Solymar Colling: 6-1, 6-1.
Kessler wasted no time getting on the board at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex, giving away only one point in the opening game to gain the quick 1-0 advantage. Colling managed to respond with a game of her own, but the Calhoun, Ga., native turned up the pressure, running away for the 6-1 opening set victory.
Colling, part of the West Coast Conference runner-up San Diego team, stole the opening game of the second set from Kessler, but in similar fashion to the first frame, Kessler answered with six-consecutive games to claim her 13th ranked victory of the year: 6-1, 6-1.
The 2022 SEC Player of the Year and four-time All-SEC selection improves to 2-2 in NCAA individual action and will meet No. 26 Connie Ma of Stanford in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
Also taking the courts on Tuesday will be the doubles squad of Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein who will face-off with Georgia Tech's No. 36 Ava Hrastar and Kylie Bilchev. Times for both matches are still TBD.
