Florida Men Send Nine Total Entries to NCAA Outdoor Championships
Friday, May 27, 2022 | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Champion Allison wasn't going to let Florida's 4x400 team go to Eugene without the best qualifying mark in the East Region.
Behind a 44.33 split on the anchor leg, following legs from Jacory Patterson, Ryan Willie and Kemuel Santana, the Florida men closed out the NCAA East Prelims with a 3:01.22 in the 4x400 to put the final piece in the puzzle of the Gators' contingent for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Florida's men will bring nine total entries at next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships, each of them with the potential to score big points in the team race.
Despite wind and rain in Bloomington on Friday, Joseph Fahnbulleh came ready to lay down some fast times on the track.
He opened the day by anchoring the Gators to a qualifying spot in the 4x100 relay. The team of Dedrick Vanover, Tyler Davis, PJ Austin and Fahnbulleh went 38.81 to punch its ticket to Eugene.
Florida will have now fielded a 4x100 team in 17 of the 19 NCAA Outdoor Championships since Mike Holloway became the Head Coach.
The Gators have seven NCAA titles in the event to their name right now, all of them coming since the turn of the century.
Following a bid in the 4x100, Fahnbulleh and Vanover came back to the track to qualify in the 100 meters.
Fahnbulleh ran the top-qualifying mark in 10.04 (+0.1) to earn his way to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Vanover wasn't far behind, clocking a 10.14 to make his debut trip to Eugene.
Florida's contingent in the 400 meters handled business as usual in the quarterfinals, sending three entries through to Oregon.
Allison came through in 45.03 with Willie (45.26) and Patterson (45.84) also earning automatic spots to next month's festivities.
Fahnbulleh wasn't done for the day until he had his say in the 200 meters. The defending NCAA Outdoor Champion in the event clocked a 19.85 (+4.4), dominating the rest of the competition.
He will have the chance to defend his crown in the event next month in Eugene.
Florida's 4x400 team solidified the ninth and final entry for the men at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with its time of 3:01.22, the tenth-best mark in program history.
The Gators will have a 4x400 team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the 18th time in 19 contested championships under Holloway. The Gators won back-to-back NCAA titles in the event in 2012 and 2013.
The contingent of entries to the NCAA Outdoor Championships will see the Gators contest two in the 100 meters, one in the 200 meters, three in the 400 meters, both relays and one in the Javelin.
Qualified to NCAA Outdoor Championships
- Joseph Fahnbulleh (100m)
- Dedrick Vanover (100m)
- Joseph Fahnbulleh (200m)
- Champion Allison (400m)
- Ryan Willie (400m)
- Jacory Patterson (400m)
- Florida (4x100 Relay)
- Florida (4x400 Relay)
- Mark Porter (Javelin)
Holloway's Thoughts:
"Qualifiers in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Both relays. We have to go to the show and get after it. Very proud of that group. And very proud of their effort all weekend long."
"At the end of the day, we're really pleased with what we've got going. We got a chance to go there in two weeks and make some noise."
"I always say it takes a year for a coach and athlete to figure each other out. Joe's freshman year was interrupted by COVID so he lost half a year. He was hurt this year indoors so he missed a lot of things we couldn't get done. Over the last three weeks, he's really starting to figure things out and trust me. Joe's a very strong-minded individual. I think he's starting to trust me and believe that I can get him to where he wants to be."
