Florida Track and Field Primed for NCAA Outdoor Championships
Tuesday, June 7, 2022 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. - The final stage of the college track and field season is set with Hayward Field awaiting some of the biggest stars in the sport.
An outdoor season that has stretched nearly three months will culminate at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week in Eugene, Oregon.
Florida is no stranger to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. A four-time champion on the men's side, the Gators are a perennial contender when the calendar flips to June.
This year is no exception for Florida's programs. Both teams enter this week with legitimate shots to score a podium finish and the pieces in place to bring home the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Men:
Florida's men will be nearly solely reliable on their sprints and relays, along with Mark Porter in the Javelin, to score points towards the team race this week.
The Gators qualified through nine entries out of the NCAA East Prelims including their 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Joseph Fahnbulleh will be busy all weekend with a potential for six races on the docket. He had the top qualifying marks out of the NCAA East Prelims in the 100 meters and 200 meters. He also anchors Florida's 4x100 team.
Fahnbulleh is the defending NCAA Outdoor Champion in the 200 meters and will have the chance to repeat this weekend.
Grant Holloway was the last Gator to repeat as an Outdoor National Champion in an individual event when he won three-in-a-row in the 110-meter hurdles from 2017-2019.
Dedrick Vanover joins Fahnbulleh in the 100 meters. Vanover, the Gainesville-native, was the SEC Indoor Champion in the 60 meters and the SEC Outdoor Runner-Up in the 100 meters.
During the indoor season, Vanover narrowly missed the NCAA final in the 60 meters.
He will also run the leadoff leg for Florida's 4x100 team which is made up of himself, Tyler Davis, PJ Austin and Fahnbulleh.
The Gators will have a heavy presence in the 400 meters this week. Champion Allison, Jacory Patterson and Ryan Willie make up Florida's contingent in the event.
Allison was the SEC Indoor and Outdoor Champion in the event and was a finalist at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
All three athletes have made the finals at every postseason meet so far this season.
Those three will also play roles on Florida's 4x400 team. The third leg of the relay team will be run by either Kemuel Santana, Jacob Miley or Collin Sieffert.
At the Tom Jones Memorial in April, Florida broke the collegiate record in the event in 2:58.53 with the team of Patterson, Willie, Miley and Allison.
Mark Porter rounds out Florida's team for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He qualified through in the Javelin for the third time in his career, the first with Florida.
All field events, excluding the multis, will be scored on the day it begins, making Porter the first potential point-scorer for the Gators at this year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Action for the men will be contested on Wednesday (June 8) and Friday (June 10).
Women:
Florida's women have the chance to make history this week in Eugene.
The Gators have never won the NCAA Women's Outdoor Championship and have never swept both titles in the same year on the women's side.
Florida won the NCAA Indoor National Championship this season and followed that up by winning the SEC Outdoor Championship in May.
The Gators bring a program-record 16 entries on the women's side to the NCAA Outdoor Championships including athletes in nine events.
Of those nine events, six of them will feature multiple Gator entries including the Heptathlon (2), Long Jump (2), Triple Jump (3), 400 Meters (2), 800 Meters (2) and 400-Meter Hurdles (2).
Florida will also field an entry in the Shot Put, 5000 Meters and the 4x400 relay.
Anna Hall will be busy this weekend. She enters Eugene as the favorite to win the Heptathlon. Her season-best and personal-best mark of 6458 is nearly 400 points higher than any other athlete in the field.
On top of that, she is qualified in the 400-meter hurdles where she has the second-best time in the nation this season.
She is also expected to play a role in Florida's 4x400 relay team at some point in the weekend.
Jasmine Moore headlines Florida's contingent in the horizontal jumps. The Gators feature five entries across the Long Jump and Triple Jump with Moore set to contest both.
Claire Bryant (Long Jump) and Natricia Hooper (Triple Jump) were First Team All-Americans during the indoor season while Alissa Braxton (Triple Jump) makes her debut at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Moore could make history of her own this weekend. No woman in NCAA history has gone 8-for-8 on titles (four conference, four national) in the horizontal jumps during the same calendar year.
She holds claim to six of those titles so far with the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the Long Jump and Triple Jump still in front of her. The Grand Prairie, Texas native will face a stiff test in both competitions against a deep and talented field.
Sterling Lester joins Hall in the Heptathlon. She was the SEC Outdoor Champion in the event after running away from the rest of the field with a personal best of 5749 points.
Vanessa Watson returns to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second-straight year in the 400-meter hurdles.
Taylor Manson and Talitha Diggs make up Florida's team in the 400 meters. The pair of quarter-milers were finalists in the event a season ago.
Diggs was the NCAA Indoor Champion in the 400 meters, giving her the chance to sweep the event across both seasons in 2022.
Parker Valby has broken onto the scene the last few weeks after returning from an injury that sidelined her for the end of the indoor season and the beginning of the outdoor season.
She was the SEC Outdoor Runner-Up in the 5000 meters and brings the second-fastest qualifying time (15:29.07) to Eugene.
The 5000 meters is the final individual event contested, which is set to be run right before the 4x400 relay on Saturday night.
Thea Jensen broke the Danish National Record in the Shot Put at the NCAA East Prelims enroute to qualifying to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships.
The Shot Put will be contested on the first day of women's action (Thursday).
Florida's duo in the 800 meters of Imogen Barrett and Gabrielle Wilkinson has been outstanding all season long. Barrett won the 800 meters at the SEC Outdoor Championships with Wilkinson winning bronze.
Wilkinson was also third last year at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800 meters.
The team of Hall, Lester, Manson and Diggs qualified Florida to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 4x400 relay.
Doneisha Anderson and Cait Tate will serve as alternates, giving Florida head coach Mike Holloway a number of options to pick from.
Action for the women will be on Thursday (June 9), Friday (Multis Only, June 10) and Saturday (June 11).
