EUGENE, Ore. – Marquis Dendy spearheaded a strong opening day for Florida's contingent of athletes at the 2022 World Championships on Friday evening.
 
Making his first appearance at the World Championships since 2017, Dendy leaped out to an auto-qualifying mark of 8.16m in the Long Jump.
 
He is among the 12 finalists for tomorrow night's Long Jump final. Dendy will attempt to collect his first medal at the World Outdoor Championships when he clashes with some of the world's finest jumpers on Saturday evening.
 
Hakim Sani Brown (Japan) and Raymond Ekevwo (Nigeria) each picked up top-three spots in their respective heats, advancing to tomorrow afternoon's semifinals in the 100 meters.
 
Sani Brown, the Japanese Champion, clocked a smooth season's best of 9.98, winning the final heat of the 100 meters with ease.
 
Ekevwo ran 10.17, picking up the final automatic spot out of the first heat on Friday night.
 
This is the third-straight World Championships that Sani Brown has gone to the semifinals of the 100 meters at the World Championships, also making the round in 2017 in London and 2019 in Doha.
 
Ekevwo was also a semifinalist over 100 meters at the previous edition of the World Championships.
 
Both the semifinals (9:00 PM EDT) and finals (10:50 PM EDT) of the 100 meters will take place tomorrow evening.
 
Sani Brown and Ekevwo are both scheduled to run out of the first semifinal on Saturday evening.
 
Gator Great Cory McGee continued her fine form over 1500 meters, earning an automatic spot to tomorrow's semifinals with the sixth-best qualifying time (4:03.61).
 
McGee will run in Heat 1 of tomorrow's semifinals in the 1500 meters with the top five from each section and next two fastest on time advancing to Monday's final.
 
Thomas Mardal (Norway) and Lloydricia Cameron (Jamaica) competed in the Hammer Throw and Shot Put respectively on Friday.
 
Doneisha Anderson ran anchor leg in the Heats of the Mixed 4x400 relay on Friday morning, splitting 53.76 for a Bahamian team that finished 15th overall.
 
In addition to the finals of the Men's Long Jump (9:25 PM EDT), semifinals of the Men's 100 Meters (9:00 PM EDT) and semifinals of the Women's 1500 meters (9:30 PM EDT), an additional group of Gators will also appear on Saturday.
 
Jasmine Moore will compete in the Qualification Stage of the Women's Triple Jump (1:30 PM EDT) on Saturday afternoon while defending World Champion Grant Holloway takes to the track in the Heats of the 110-meter hurdles (2:25 PM EDT).
