EUGENE, Ore. – Never count out
Champion Allison.
Â
Coming down the final 100 meters of Wednesday night's semifinals of the men's 400 meters, Allison sat third, right outside the automatic qualifying spots.
Â
But he turned on an extra gear down the homestretch, tracking down Jonathan Jones of Barbados and World Record Holder Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa.
Â
The Houston, Texas native crossed the line in 44.71, the third-fastest qualifying time, and joined Michael Norman as Team USA's representatives in the finals of the Men's 400 Meters on Friday night.
Â
Talitha Diggs ran 50.84 in the semis of the Women's 400 Meters on Wednesday evening but didn't have enough to crack the finals, finishing 10th in the world at just 19-years-old.
Â
That was the 40th race of the season for the NCAA and U.S. Champion. She will be available for selection as Team USA chases a gold medal in the 4x400 relay later this week.
Â
Heats of the event are scheduled for Saturday with the final on Sunday night. Team selections for each race will be made a couple hours prior to the competition.
Â
Allison will also be available for selection to the Men's 4x400 relay but will first focus his attention to Friday night's final of the 400 meters against some of the world's finest athletes.
Â
He will run out of Lane 6 on Friday evening at 10:35 PM EDT.
