FORT MYERS, Fla. – Emily de Oliveira and
Emma Shelton each picked up another singles victory in the main draw of their respective brackets, advancing to the semi-final and final rounds on Sunday at the Bedford Cup.
In her sophomore campaign, de Oliveira remained impressive on Saturday, battling to the final round of the Blue bracket in singles competition. De Oliveira raced out to an early lead against USF's Kiana Makhtari, 6-3. It wouldn't be a clean sweep for the Gator, as Makhtari responded with a strong 6-2 set of her own. Showing composure during the third set tiebreaker, de Oliveira managed to gain the lead and hold onto it, taking the match 10-7. She will now see Stetson's Magdalena Hedzrak in the finals on Sunday morning.
Shelton continued to shine on the second day of competition in Fort Myers, using a strong effort to advance to the semifinal round in the Green draw of singles action. Matched up with Annabelle Davis of North Florida, the senior wasted no time in gaining an advantage, taking the first set behind a 6-3 effort.
Davis would not back down, however, evening the match with a 6-3 set of her own in the second frame, leading to a 10-point tiebreaker third set. Ten points wouldn't be enough as the two found themselves in a dogfight. Shelton would end the victor, outlasting her opponent for a 16-14 victory.
Freshman
Sophie Williams was able to advance to the semifinal of the Green consolation bracket after defeating Isabel Oliveira (North Florida), 5-0, before Oliveira retired due to illness.
On the consolation side of the doubles bracket, a pair of Gators' squads earned victories.
Carly Briggs and de Oliveira, after dropping a tough match in the main draw of the doubles bracket, responded well by taking down Florida Gulf Coast's Jordana Ossa and Lola Glantz, 6-4.
Shelton and Williams also earned a consolation victory in doubles, outlasting Sara Rakim and Genesis Whitelock of Florida A&M, 7-6. The tiebreaker would come down to the wire as well, as the Orange & Blue took a 7-5 win.
