Sunday, October 8, 2023 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – Among Florida soccer's results facing Georgia – its most frequent opponent in the program's 29-season history – a scoreless tie happened in the first and now last of the 39-all-time meetings.
Florida and Georgia started off the Southeastern Conference action Sunday with a 0-0 tie in front of 2,111 at the Turner Soccer Complex.
The first ever UF-Georgia meeting on Oct. 15, 1995 in Gainesville was a 0-0 overtime tie. Extended minutes for regular-season matches was discontinued beginning in the 2022 season.
Georgia is receiving votes in latest United Soccer Coaches poll. The Bulldogs are the first of three of UF's final five regular-season opponents ranked or receiving votes in the coaches poll.
This Afternoon's Match:
The Gators best opportunities came late in the match. That included with less than two minutes remaining, Julianne Leskauskas sent the ball to catch Lauren McCloskey making a left side run. The ball she one-touched to the center of the box was just gathered up by Georgia goalkeeper Jordan Brown before a fast closing Amelia Malkin could get her foot on it.
Florida's defense withstood a Georgia attack which has scored at least one goal in all but one match this season prior to Sunday's result. For the match, the Bulldogs outshot the Gators 11-2.
Coach Bohon said:
"Overall I was pleased with today. While we wished we could have maintained more possession, I thought we defended very well and kept most of their attacking efforts in front of us.
"I also think we showed some of our intangible values. We played with heart; we played as a unit; players off the bench helped keep the intensity and level high; our leaders stepped up. At the end of the day, earning a point on the road after a quick turnaround is always a solid result in the SEC." – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
