COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 5/6 Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams begin championship season starting Tuesday, Feb. 14, going through Saturday, Feb. 18 at the 2023 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Texas A&M.
The men are in pursuit of an 11th straight conference championship. One of the most dominant runs in SEC history, Florida has the third-most consecutive men's swimming and diving conference titles in a row (Florida – 13 from 1956-1968; Auburn – 16 from 1997-2012.) The 43 SEC Championships in team history are the second-most by any SEC program across all sports, only behind Kentucky in men's basketball (56).
The women are looking to clinch their 18th conference title after finishing fifth last year, but have placed second three of the past four seasons.
Head coach Anthony Nesty is searching for his fifth-straight men's title, and first women's title at the helm for Florida. Nesty is the four-time reigning SEC Men's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year, the only coach in program history to earn those honors in each of their first four seasons.
Among the travel party for the Gators are 23 All-Americans, 12 on the men's side and 11 on the women's side. Florida has 11 top-ten times this season, including freshman Joshua Liendo, who has the fourth-fastest 50 free time in the country this year at 18.83 and sixth-fastest 100 free time at 41.70. Alfonso Mestre, who was named SEC Male Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 8, has the fifth-fastest 500 free time at 4:11.02, while Tyler Watson's 1650 free time of 14:48.34 that he swam last week at the Auburn Invitational is the sixth-best this season in the NCAA. On the women's side, Mabel Zavaros has the fourth-fastest 500 free time in the nation this season at 4:39.28, while Tylor Mathieu's 4:40.23 is the seventh-best in the country this season.
The 2022 SEC Co-Female Diver of the Year, Maha Amer set the school record earlier this season in the 1-meter, scoring a 350.55. Leonardo Garcia has posted career performances in the 3-meter, tallying a 437.33 and a 439.43 in back-to-back weeks for the four-time All-American.
Florida has racked up 18 SEC Weekly honors so far this season. Liendo has a team-high three honors, while Hayden Miller, Skip Donald, and Zoe Dixon have collected two each.
Prelims begin at 11:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, then 9:30 a.m. ET Wednesday-Saturday. Finals are slated to start at 5:20 p.m. ET on Tuesday, then 6:30 p.m. ET for the rest of the championship competition.
Both prelims and finals throughout the entire meet will be streamed on SEC Network + and results can be found at 12thMan.com/SECSwimDive.
Entering the meet, the women are 6-1 overall, 3-0 against SEC opponents (Arkansas, No. 15 Georgia, No. 7 Tennessee), while the men are 5-1, including wins over No. 9 Virginia and No. 13 Tennessee.
Nine women's SEC teams and six men's SEC teams are ranked in the February CSCAA poll, with Florida leading the way on both the men's side at fifth in the nation and women's side at sixth in the country.
