Greif clinched both victories on the road trip.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 26 Florida men's tennis conquered the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville, 4-3, and completed a comeback victory for the first time this season after losing the doubles point on Saturday afternoon.
After winning the doubles point in the last three matches, Florida (8-7, 3-2 SEC) found themselves at an early disadvantage against Vanderbilt (5-10, 1-4 SEC). On court two, Nate Bonetto/Tanapatt Nirundorn were unable to find their footing against Nathan Cox/Michael Ross and were the first pair to drop, 6-1.
Both Florida pairs on court one and three were locked at four apiece with their Vanderbilt opponents looking to hold serve. At the top position, Jeremie Casabon/Siim Troost managed to break No. 18 Will Grant/Axel Nefve's serve and won their service game to grab the doubles point for the Commodores. Jonah Braswell/Lukas Greif were leading 5-4 over Joubert Klopper/Macsen Sisam when the match went unfinished.
With the match being pushed indoors with only five courts available due to the cold weather, singles began with the first five players in the lineup.
The top three positions came into singles play on fire with No. 72 Grant leading the charge on court two against Klopper. After quickly grabbing the first set 6-3, the junior opened with a 3-0 lead in the second and his grasp on the match didn't faulter, ultimately winning 6-1 and tying Vanderbilt at one apiece.
Following up with a victory in straights was No. 79 Braswell on court three for Florida's first lead of the match, 2-1. The freshman won the final two games of the first set and broke Ross' to snatch up the opening set, 6-4. Momentum was clearly in the hands of Braswell, as the Sarasota, Fla. native won the first five games in the second on his way to a 6-1 win.
Next was No. 103 Nefve from the top position shutting down Cox for the 3-1 advantage. Snatching the first set, 6-3, Nefve was initially tied 3-3 in the second. The graduate student broke Cox twice and won the next three games to secure the 6-3 victory in straights.
Vanderbilt refused to go down without a fight. The Commodores responded by winning on court four via a three-setter by Siim Troost over Olek Orlikowski and straight sets against Togan Tokac by Jeremie Casabon.
Waiting his turn to take the court, Greif hit court six and the match lied in the veteran's hand. The moment wasn't too big for the senior, as Greif dropped just four points in the entire first set and recorded a bagel on Macsen Sisam. Sisam held serve to open the second, but the Newburgh, Ind. native won the next four games to continue his dominance and sent Florida back home to Gainesville with a 4-3 victory by winning 6-2.
The Gators host Arkansas Friday, March 24 at 5 p.m. and Auburn Sunday, March 26 at noon after finishing the road trip 2-0.
QUOTES FROM THE COURT
Associate Head Coach Mat Cloer
On finishing the road trip 2-0 and having to play indoors…
"I think our guys did a great job and it's huge to come out with another road win. Especially after dropping the doubles point, it's the first time this year we've been able to comeback and win after losing doubles. Credit to the team and the effort and the leadership of the upperclassmen for really stepping up and leading the way today. I'm really proud of the team and super happy."
On opening singles with wins on courts one, two and three…
"It was huge to regain the momentum after falling behind early. The guys at one, two and three really just got up and they didn't let go. That was huge for them and it was huge for our team. Getting back into the lead and obviously with Lukas being in a weird situation with us only playing on five courts, for him to come on in that moment and play pretty flawlessly to the lead the way was huge."
On Lukas Greif's veteran presence to play so well in a big moment…
"Lukas has been working so hard. I think he handled the moment really well and really got himself in the right spot mentally to go out there and do what he needed to do. Handled the moment really well and feel really good having a guy who has been around the block a few times come out to close that match. He really did a great job."
