Gators Begin Action in Two Tournaments

Jeremy Jin secures place in ITA Sectionals quarterfinals and Florida completes day one of the Bonita Bay Classic
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida men's tennis team see success at ITA Sectionals and the Bonita Bay Classic. Jeremy Jin completed the second day of competition at ITA Sectionals, while five other Gators opened play at the Bonita Bay Classic.
Jeremy Jin opened singles action in the Round of 32 against Javier Montoya (South Alabama) on Thursday afternoon. Jin defeated Montoya in the first set leaving little room for doubt as he took the first set 6-2. Jin proved to be too much for Montoya as he clinched the second set 6-2 to take the victory.
On Friday Jin faced Joshua Dous-Karpenschif (FSU) in the Round of 16. The sophomore found success over Dous-Karpenschif taking the victory in straight sets. Jin won the first set 6-1 and shutout Dous-Karpenschif 6-0 in the second. Jin is set to face Jack Loutit (Kentucky) on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Two quarterfinal playoff winners will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship.
At the Bonita Bay Classic, the Gators went 5-1 on the first day of competition. In singles action Florida faced the University of Central Florida and Florida Gulf Coast in doubles play.
JanMagnus Johnson matched up against Nicolas Oliveira and clinched the only straight set victory for the Gators. Johnson took the first set 6-2 before replicating the same scoreline in the second and taking the win.
Tanapatt Nirundorn defeated Emilio Sanchez in three sets. Nirundorn capitalized on a 6-2 first set win before falling to Sanchez 1-6 in the second forcing a third set. The two battled in the third set, but Nirundorn outlasted Sanchez 10-6.
Freshman Francesco Cordova also found success in a three-set match against Luca Hotze. Cordova took the first set 6-1, but Hotze responded with a 6-4 win in the second extending the match. Cordova clinched the final set 10-8 to secure the victory.
Mattia Akcan dropped his match against Adriano Dzhenev 3-6, 2-2.
On the doubles side Florida went 2-0 against Florida Gulf Coast. Ben Weintraub and Tanapatt Nirundorn left no room for doubt as they defeated Guglielmo Stefanacci and CJ Smith in a 6-2 effort.
Johnson and Cordova saw a back and forth battle with Pablo Paternostro and Harry Michalowski but edged the FGCU pair 7-6.
On Saturday, Florida will compete against Tulsa in single action and UCF in doubles competition.
