Florida Drops to Georgia in Consolation Match

SEATTLE — The Gators faced the University of Georgia in Saturday morning's consolation match at ITA Indoor Nationals. Florida was unable to recover from losing its rhythm in doubles and lost to the Bulldogs, 4-1.

On the doubles side Alicia Dudeney and Bentee Spee put up a strong effort but ultimately fell to Georgia's Aysegul Mert/Dasha Vidmanova 6-3. The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point despite a hard-fought battle from freshman pair Qavia Lopez/Malwina Rowinska. The pair dropped 6-4 against Guillermina Grant/Mai Nirundron.

Entering singles down a point, Florida attempted to regain momentum. Dudeney was unable to secure a victory against Grant in a 6-1, 6-1 loss. Gators freshman Qavia Lopez defeated Nirundorn 6-4, 6-1 and notched the only point for Florida.

No. 67-ranked Carly Briggs fought hard but could not overcome No. 38 Vidmanova in singles, with a final score of 6-2, 6-0. Sara Dahlstrom was unable to clinch a victory against Anastasiia Lopata in the singles match, falling 6-2, 6-3. The remaining matches went unfinished although Rachel Gailis was well on her way to a win over Vecic taking the first set 7-6 and leading 2-0 before the match ended.

HEAD COACH ROLAND THORNQVIST SAID:
"Another tough and difficult match against a top 7 team. We are fighting hard but coming up short but the important thing for us is to keep our eyes on the long term. As we keep battling and get healthy as a group, these matches, although hurtful now, will ultimately help us be the best we can be for the long SEC slate."
