Gators Earn Five Indoor All-Time Top 10 Marks on Day 1 of Split Weekend
Friday, February 9, 2024 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Florida Gators Men's and Women's Track & Field teams completed a successful day at both the Tyson Invitational and David Hemery Valentine Invitational spearheaded by five Florida Indoor All-Time Top 10 Marks.
Here are the headlines from Friday's action from both meets.
ASEKOL AND THORNER RECORD TOP 10 TIMES
Flomena Asekol started the day in Boston, Ma. with a historic run in the women's mile. She knocked eight seconds of her personal best in the event earning a time of 4:26.47. This mark not only led to a third place finish (and top collegiate finish) at the meet, but now stands as the top time on Florida's Indoor All-Time Top 10 List, the top mark this year in the NCAA and the third best indoor time ever in the women's mile.
Elise Thorner joined her teammate on Florida's Indoor All-Time Top 10 list with a personal record finish of 4:35.72 improving on her old personal best which she set back in December at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
CLEMONS SETS NEW PERSONAL RECORD
Malcolm Clemons continues to re-write the record books in 2024. He has moved up on Florida's Men's Long Jump Indoor All-Time Top 10 List for the third time this season. Clemons' best leap of 8.17m/26'9.75" earned him a first place finish at the Tyson Invitational and cleared his previous best mark by .11m. This mark is now second on the All-Time Top 10 List and also the second best mark in the country in 2024.
MAZZA-DOWNIE RECORDS SIXTH BEST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Amelia Mazza-Downie was the third Gator at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational to set an all-time top 10 mark. Competing in the 5000m, Mazza-Downie posted a time of 16:01.71 which places her fifth on Florida's list.
GROSS IV MAKES STRONG FLORIDA DEBUT
Will Gross IV, making his Florida debut, placed seventh in the men's weight throw. His mark of 20.17m/66'2.25" sets a new personal record and also places him seventh on Florida's Indoor All-Time Top 10 List.
MCCOY PRs TWO SEPARATE TIMES AND PLACES SECOND
Wanya McCoy, competing in the men's 60m, set a new personal record on two separate occasions in Friday's action. After setting a new personal record of 6.64 in the qualifying round of the event, McCoy improved his time by recording a 6.58 in the preliminary round. He ended the event with a second place finish in the final round.
STARK EARNS TWO TOP-TWO FINISHES
Participating in both the women's 60m and women's 60m hurdles, Grace Stark recorded second and first place finishes, respectively. After advancing to the finals in both events courtesy of sixth and second place finishes, Stark recorded times of 7.27 and 7.95 in the finals.
