Smith Claims Florida Men’s First SEC 200 IM Title Since 2019, Secures Career-First Individual Title

Senior Julian Smith won his first SEC individual title on Wednesday night, swimming 1:39.29 in the men's 200 IM to record the program's second-fastest time.
 
ATHENS, Ga. – Florida's men's and women's swimming & diving program remain in the top-three following day three of the 2025 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatoirum.
 
Julian Smith headlined Wednesday's events, swimming the 200 IM in 1:39.38 to earn Florida's only gold medal of the night. His finish marks the senior's first SEC individual title of his career and is the first Florida male to be crowned the 200 IM champion since Kieran Smith in 2019. He is now the 21st Gator to take home gold in the event and his finish sits as the second-best in school history, where he is the only Gator in seven years to record a program top-five time.

Overall, the Gators tallied five medals, while recording eight program top-ten times and six NCAA A-cut times during Wednesday finals. Additionally, the men's 200 free relay team of Josh Liendo, Alexander Painter, Ed Fullum-Huot and Scotty Buff set a school record with their 1:13.29 time.
 
Women's Performance Notes
  • The 200 free relay A team of Bella Sims, Micayla Cronk, Olivia Peoples and Addison Reese recorded an A-cut time of 1:28.24 to record the ninth-fastest time in program history.
  • Freshman Julie Brousseau made her first SEC Championships podium appearance in the 500 free. The 2024 Paris Olympian, who represented Team Canada, claimed third with an NCAA A-cut time of 4:34.59. Her finish becomes the fifth-fastest time in school history. Senior Emma Weyant also competed in the A final, taking sixth with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:37.98. Mabel Zavaros finished fourth in the B final, 12th overall with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:38.98.
  • Bella Sims posted a third-place time of 1:53.63 to earn bronze and an NCAA A-cut time. Lainy Kruger won the B final in 1:54.08 to improve to fifth-best in program history. The women had a total of five swimmers make either the championship, B or C final in the event.
  • Camyla Monroy represented the Gators in the women's 3-meter A final after placing fourth in prelims. The sophomore finished sixth with a final score of 320.95 to add 24 points to the women's score.  
  • Overall, 19 student-athletes represented the Florida women on Wednesday.
Men's Performance Notes
  • Florida's 200 free relay team of Josh Liendo, Alexander Painter, Ed Fullum-Huot and Scotty Buff set a new school record after putting together a time of 1:13.29 en route to an NCAA A-cut time and a silver-medal finish.
  • Five Gators advanced to either the championship, B or C final in the 500 free. Jake Mitchell, Gio Linscheer, Eric Brown, Oskar Lindholm and Luke Corey contributed 72 points to the men's team score.
  • The 200 IM was Julian Smith's moment to shine, as the senior secured Florida's only gold medal of the evening after going 1:39.38. He reset his Gabrielsen Natatorium pool record from Nov. 2024 and became the second-fastest Gator in program history. His podium finish marks the first SEC individual gold medal in Smith's career and the program's first since 2019.
  • Five Gators closed out the swimming portion of the night in the 50 free finals. Josh Liendo earned his second SEC silver medal in the event after posted an NCAA A-cut time of 18.35. Swimming in the A final with the junior was Scotty Buff and Alexander Painter, as the pair went six-seven after going 18.73 and 18.80, respectively. The three now hold three of the program's top-five times.
  • Overall, 16 student-athletes represented the Florida men on Wednesday.

Day four of SEC Championships continues tomorrow with the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free and Men's 1-Meter Diving. Morning prelims will begin at 9:30 a.m., with finals scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The men's 1-meter diving prelims is set for 12:00 p.m. and the B final will immediately follow. The 1-meter A final will conclude Thursday's events.
