COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The first collegiate goals from a pair of Gators earned a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon at Maryland. Graduate Charlotte McClure scored the first goal of the match while freshman Addy Hess added two more in the second half.
The loss was Maryland's first in home action this season, as the Terrapins entered the match with a 4-0 record at Ludwig Field.
This Afternoon's Scoring:
A free kick ended with the Gators scoring their earliest goal of the season in the 14th minute. Abby Gemma sent in the kick just two steps inside the Terrapin half. That ball to the middle to the box was sent out by a Terrapin and freshman Kai Tsakiris headed that clearance attempt to the middle of box. McClure's right-footed volley to the upper corner scored her first collegiate goal.
The Terrapins went a player down in the 26th minute when Mia Mitchell received a red card on a foul on Hess.
Florida pushed out to a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute when Hess scored her first collegiate goal off a penalty kick. The penalty kick was awarded when the Terrapins' Ella Bulava clipped Megan Hinnenkamp from behind in the box.
The Terrapins cut into the lead in the 58th minute. From the endline, Kelsey Smith sent a ball across the face of the goal that was one-touched in by Tahirah Turnage-Morales.
The final goal came after senior Njeri Butts ran the ball down and was able to just able to get a foot on it before it rolled out the endline. That pass was touched in by Hess' left foot from the corner of the six-yard box for her second goal of the half.

Coach Bohon Said:
"Credit to Maryland. We knew that they were kind of a gritty team, similar DNA to us, and they showed that today. But I was really proud of our players, because at the end of the day, we all know as coaches that you're going to have good wins, pretty wins, ugly wins. For our kind of a younger group to figure out a way to win this game was really important for us early on in the season.
"Really good goals. I'm disappointed we had two chances when it was I think still one zero that would have put the game away. But again, for us to come on the road and come out with a win against the Big Ten team is important for us today.
"We're happy to have a happy plane ride home and come back for two more home games before we open up SEC play." – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
