
Women’s DMR Team Shatters Program Record on First Day of SEC Indoor Championships

Hilda Olemomoi and Kelvin Cheruiyot earned 5000m podium marks as Gators conclude day one of conference meeting
COLLEGE STATION, Tex. – The first day of competition came to a wrap on Thursday evening, as the Gators concluded day one of the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Orange and Blue capped the first day with three podium finishes, five personal best performances and one new program record.
The Gator women currently hold fourth place after day one with 23 team points, as the men sit steady in seventh with a total of nine team points.
HIGHLIGHTS
Pentathlon
Pauline Bikembo opened the day for the Gators with three season best performances in the women's pentathlon, including a season best total of 4,140 points to score two points for the Orange and Blue. The Saint-Leu-la-Forêt native recorded top marks in the 60m hurdles, high jump and shot put to secure a seventh place finish and move to No. 5 on the program's all-time list.
Sprints
The Gators went four for four on season best performances in the women's 200m prelims, with Gabrielle Matthews, Sydney Sutton, Quincy Penn and Tyra Cox each turning in top marks. Matthews led the charge with a 22.87, moving to No. 3 in program history and securing a spot in the championship round, while Sutton followed closely in 22.90 to claim the No. 4 all time mark and earn a berth alongside Matthews in Saturday's final.
On the men's side, Wanya McCoy captured the 200m prelim in 20.38, moving to No. 2 in the NCAA this season and advancing to Saturday's championship round.
Distance
Hilda Olemomoi opened the distance segment with a scoring 5000m mark, claiming SEC runner-up honors with a finishing time of 15:12.13, as Kelvin Cheruiyot added to the podium performances in the men's 5000m, earning a bronze medal with a time of 13:40.75.
In the women's distance medley relay, a quartet of Gators locked in a new program No. 1 mark of 10:46.45 to shatter the previous record by over five seconds. The team of Beth Morley, Malia Campbell, Layla Haynes and Claire Stegall earned a runner-up finish and a silver medal in the penultimate event of the day.
