Jack Turner’s NCAA Championship career-low (68, -4) helped keep Florida in position for the upcoming cuts.
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Behind a career-low NCAA National Championship round of 4-under 68 from Jack Turner, the No. 2 Florida men's golf team was a shot better (+2) in round two and are in 16th through 36-holes at Omni La Costa on Saturday.
UF is part of the afternoon wave and will tee off round three at 2:50 p.m. paired with Arkansas State (+6) and Georgia (+7). The Gators are two shots back of tomorrow's 54-hole cut. Coverage of the third round will be streamed live and free on babygrandegolf.com beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Following Sunday's third round, the field will be trimmed to the top-15 teams and nine individuals from non-advancing teams for Monday's final round of stroke play. After 72 holes, the top-eight teams will advance to match play while an individual national champion will also be crowned. The team national championship will then be decided through match play, with quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Tuesday followed by the championship match on Wednesday.
Turner carded his career-low at NCAAs, four shots better than his previous low. The junior recorded his fifth under par round of the postseason and improved to 12-under across 28 postseason stroke-play rounds (504 holes). He climbed into a tie for 26th and sits 2-under through two rounds.
Florida showed flashes throughout the day but was unable to sustain momentum. The Gators opened 4-under through the first two holes before four bogeys between holes four through seven and a pair of double bogeys on holes eight and nine dropped the team to 3-over at the turn.
Three birdies fell on hole 10 and one on 12, but the start got canceled out by four bogeys across the first four holes of the back nine. Both the final counting score and non-counter was 77 (+5) from Matthew Kress and Zack Swanwick. A pair of bogeys from Swanwick on 14 and 15, and Kress' birdies on 13 and 15 tied their score in the round for the highest counting to finish the final three holes (16-18). In his fourth National Championship, Kress bounced back from a 6-over first nine with a 1-under back nine.
Florida had an important three-under finish in the final three holes led by Turner's birdie-birdie finish and Parker Sands' birdie on 18 for his 71 (-1). The sophomore regrouped from 2-over on the front with a 3-under back nine. Making a seven-shot swing from his opening 18-holes, his 1-under round was his fifth under par out of eight rounds in his postseason debut.
Luke Poulter logged the other counting round of 74 (+2) as the junior improved by two shots from his opening round.
Since the current NCAA Championship format was introduced in 2015, Florida has advanced to the fourth and final round of stroke play five times, including each of the last four seasons and each year the championships have been contested at La Costa. The Gators have missed the 54-hole cut only three times, most recently in 2021.
