AS A SOPHOMORE 2005-06: Played in 16 games in 2005-06, more than double the number of games he entered the previous year… Came up with a career-high of seven points against Savannah State including a memorable dunk… Has participated in the last two slam dunk contests at Midnight Madness in 2004 and Madness 2005... Opened the season by playing in both of the opening rounds of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, wins over St. Peter's and Albany... Saw time against Alabama State, UCF, Bethune Cookman and Jacksonville where he went one-for-two at the free throw line and grabbed two rebounds... Scored five points against Morgan State... Recorded his first career steal agains the Bears... Set career-highs offensively against Savannah State with seven points on three field goals, including a dunk and three-pointer... Played a career-high 10 minutes and grabbed three rebounds... Saw four minutes of action during the first half against Mississippi... Contributed with a pair of free throws against the Rebels... Played in the Gators' 15-point win over Kentucky at Rupp Arena, their first win in Lexington since 1998... PREP: A First Team All-Pinellas County selection in both his junior and senior seasons in high school… Set game records for steals and offensive rebounds and season records for two-point field goals made and attempted, blocks, dunks, points per game and field goal percentage… Played in the first Pinellas vs. Hillsborough All-Star game and was the runner-up in the Pinellas vs. Hillsborough Dunk Contest...
PERSONAL: The son of Gary and Janet Tyler, both Michigan State alums… Gary was a letterwinner in baseball at Michigan State while Janet lettered in track and field… Janet had classes with Earvin "Magic" Johnson, who attended Michigan State… Garrett watched UF basketball from the stands his freshman year as a member of the Rowdy Reptiles… During that year he traveled to Memphis, Tenn., to compete in the U.S. Open National Racquetball Championships, where he represented UF and placed fourth in the Men's B Doubles Division… Graduated high school with an International Baccalaureate (IB) degree, magna cum laude (4.0) and volunteered 350 hours at a local hospice his senior year… Interned at a civil engineering firm between his freshman and sophomore years in college and will pursue a career in engineering upon completion of his degree… Born Jan. 26, 1985.
BEYOND BASKETBALL
- A senior academically, he spent his freshman year at UF as a member of the Rowdy Reptiles
- Placed fourth that same year for UF is in the US Open National Racquetball Championships in Men's B Doublles
- Parents were both athletes at Michigan State; his mother attended classes with Magic Johnson
- Was in attendance for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals in 2004 as he watched favorite team, the Tampa Lightning, hoist the cup
