UF'S MORRISON ADVANCES AT ROLEX NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS -- University of Florida junior Jeff Morrison advanced to the round of 16 at the 2000 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday at the Brookhaven Country Club just outside Dallas. Morrison, the second seed, downed Brad Erickson of Northwestern 6-4, 6-4 Thursday afternoon and will face LSU's 15th-ranked Michal Chmela on Friday at 11 a.m. ET. Morrison and Chmela are meeting for the second time in their collegiate careers, with Morrison taking a 6-2, 6-3 victory in a dual match meeting at No. 1 singles on March 24, 1999.
Senior Justin O'Neal who is ranked 16th in the ITA rankings, dropped a tight match to Stanford's sixth-ranked Alex Kim, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (6), in the first round. O'Neal will play in the consolation draw Friday morning. O'Neal was making his first appearance at the tournament by virtue of his runner-up showing at the ITA Region III Indoor Championships this past November.
Morrison reached the quarterfinals of last year's Rolex before falling to eventual champion James Blake of Harvard. Four months later Morrison defeated Blake in the finals of the NCAA tournament. The tournament, which is the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam, is hosted by Southern Methodist University.
