FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS -- University of Florida junior Jeff Morrison advanced to the semifinals of the 2000 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with two victories Friday at the Brookhaven Country Club just outside Dallas. Morrison, the second seed, beat LSU's 15th-ranked Michal Chmela, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16 before battling to a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) victory over Kentucky's ninth-ranked Carlos Drada in the quarterfinals.
Morrison, who has not lost a set thus far, will meet Stanford's fourth-ranked Geoff Abrams in one semifinal Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. ET. Morrison reached the quarterfinals of last year's Rolex before falling to eventual champion James Blake of Harvard. Four months later Morrison defeated Blake in the finals of the NCAA tournament.
In the consolation draw, senior Justin O'Neal, who is ranked 16th in the ITA rankings, moved into Saturday's semifinals with two wins Friday. O'Neal downed Leif Meineke of Boise State, who is ranked tied for 21st nationally, in the first round of the consolation draw 6-4, 6-2 and followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Baylor's 27th-ranked Johann Jooste. O'Neal will play in the consolation semifinals at 10:00 a.m. against an opponent still to be determined.
The tournament, which is the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam, is hosted by Southern Methodist University.
