UF'S MORRISON ADVANCES TO FINALS AT ROLEX NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, UF'S O'NEAL IN CONSOLATION FINAL
Saturday, February 5, 2000 | Men's Tennis
FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS -- University of Florida junior Jeff Morrison advanced to the finals of the 2000 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Saturday at the Brookhaven Country Club just outside Dallas.
Morrison, the second seed, rallied to beat Stanford's fourth-ranked Geoff Abrams 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3 and will face top-seeded Daniel Andersson of Virginia Commonwealth in Sunday's final at 12:30 p.m. ET. For the first time in the tournament's 22-year history the men's singles final will feature the top two seeds. In Saturday's other semifinal, Andersson topped Stanford's Alex Kim 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Morrison, who will be going for his second Grand Slam title after claiming last year's NCAA singles title, has won 37 of his last 38 matches dating back to last year's Rolex. He reached the quarterfinals of last year's tournament before falling to eventual champion James Blake of Harvard. Four months later Morrison defeated Blake in the finals of the NCAA tournament.
In the consolation draw, senior Justin O'Neal, who is ranked 16th in the ITA rankings, reached Sunday's final with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alfonso Honrado of Oklahoma City Saturday. O'Neal will face Arkansas' Oskar Johansson, who is ranked eighth nationally, at 11 a.m. ET in the finals.
The tournament, which is the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam, is hosted by Southern Methodist University.
