UF'S MORRISON FALLS IN FINAL AT ROLEX NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, UF'S O'NEAL CLAIMS CONSOLATION TITLE
Sunday, February 6, 2000 | Men's Tennis
FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS -- University of Florida junior Jeff Morrison lost in the finals of the 2000 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam, Sunday at the Brookhaven Country Club just outside Dallas.
Morrison, the second seed, dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to top-seeded Daniel Andersson of Virginia Commonwealth, giving Andersson his second Grand Slam title of the year after he also won the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships in September.
Morrison, who was denied his second Grand Slam title after claiming last year's NCAA singles title, has still won 37 of his last 39 matches dating back to last year's Rolex. He reached the quarterfinals of last year's tournament before falling to eventual champion James Blake of Harvard. Four months later Morrison defeated Blake in the finals of the NCAA tournament.
In the consolation draw, senior Justin O'Neal, who is ranked 16th in the ITA rankings, captured the back draw title with a 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory over Arkansas' Oskar Johansson, who is ranked eighth nationally. O'Neal rebounded from a first round defeat in three sets in the main draw to win the consolation bracket with four victories.
