Tuesday, March 13, 2007 | Men's Tennis
For the third time in five days, the University of Florida men's tennis team was in action on its home courts as the Gators came away with a 7-0 victory over Miami Tuesday afternoon. With the win, UF improved to 7-4 overall while Miami slipped to 4-7 on the year.
The meeting was the last scheduled match between UF and an in state opponent this season. With the win, the Gators improved to 26-1 all-time against teams from the sunshine state under sixth-year head coach Andy Jackson.
In doubles play, UF picked up the point for the first time in the last three outings with wins on courts one and three. UF's Greg Ouellette and Jesse Levine picked up their third win of the season over a ranked opponent by defeating Miami's Luigi D'Agord and Josh Cohen (No. 15), 8-4. Nestor Briceno and Geoffrey Barton secured the point with an 8-4 decision over Barnabas Carrega and Hector Nieto on court three.
Briceno (No. 106) carried the momentum into singles play where he took out Cohen in straight sets (7-6 (3), 6-4) to put UF on top 2-0.
Two minutes later, freshman Dan Cash got Florida to within one of clinching the match with a straight set win of his own at the bottom of the order against Nieto (6-3, 6-4). The victory was the first in a dual match for Cash in his Gator career.
Action on courts two, five and one all ended within moment of each other and saw UF gain a 6-0 lead. Ouellette clinched the match by defeating Daniel Vallverdu (No. 65), 6-4, 6-2. From there Jordan Dolberg added to the total with a 6-0, 6-4 showing against J.C. Whitner on court five.
At the top of the lineup, Levine (No. 13) held off D'Agord (No. 44) (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) to move to 10-0 on the season. D'Agord, who was the ACC Player of the Year in 2006, was the seventh ranked opponent Levine has defeated this year (six ranked in the top 50) and the fifth who earned All-America honors in 2006.
Billy Mulligan gave Florida the shutout by coming back to take the third set from Vivek Subramanian (5-7, 6-3, 7-5). The victor was the third for Mulligan this season in a dual match.
Florida (which reentered the ITA top 25 this afternoon at No. 23) continues its home stand on Friday, March 23 when the Gators return to Southeastern Conference action against Arkansas at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
