Gators Sweep Twelve Singles Matches at Day Two of USTA/ITA Southeast Regional

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida men's tennis team had a stellar day on the singles courts with all nine of the UF players getting a singles victory in a day where the Gators competed in 12 singles matches.
Friday morning began with all three of the Gators in the singles qualifying draw reaching the main draw by straight set victories. Senior Maxx Lipman defeated Miami's Flores, 6-3, 6-2. McClain Kessler was victorious against UNF's Goldberg, 6-1, 6-1 and Josh Wardell won against USF's Butler, 6-2, 6-2. In the qualifying back draw, Jordan Belga defeated Muscheites of UNF in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
The singles main draw saw all eight Gators advance to the round of 32. Freshman Alfredo Perez moved on with a victory over FAU's Schohn, 7-5, 6-2. Elliott Orkin cruised in his first match by defeating Scarpa of Mercer, 6-0, 6-3. Ball of Stetson fell to Diego Hidalgo, 6-3, 6-2. Chase Perez-Blanco defeated Georgia State's Kennedy in one of two Gator three set matches, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
In what was one of the most exciting matches of the day, redshirt sophomore Josh Wardell defeated Georgia's Duncan in three sets. The Gators took the first set, but fell in the second to reach a third with the bulldog. Wardell was able to take down Duncan, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Senior Gordon Watson defeated qualifier Melendez of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 6-1. Lipman and Kessler were able to win their second singles matches of the day. Lipman defeated FAU's Gitin and Kessler advanced with a win over Antropikas of Stetson.
The main draw doubles round of 64 saw two pairs of Gators receiving a bye and two pairs of Gators competing. Perez-Blanco and Wardell defeated FAMU's Okungbowa and Espinoza, 8-4. The freshmen duo of Kessler and Perez cruised to an 8-3 win over FAU's tandem of Burnett and Gitin.
Senior duo Hidalgo and Watson received a bye in the round of 64 and saw their opponents default in the round of 32. The No. 12-ranked Gator tandem of Lipman and Orkin defeated UCF's Acree and Sangroniz handedly, 8-1. In other doubles action, the underclassman Gator duos each fell in their round of 32 matches by way of 8-6 scores.
The Gators continue play tomorrow morning with the singles main draw round of 32 matches beginning after the singles consolation round of 32 matches.
