Four Gators Into Singles Quarterfinal Round at USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla.- The University of Florida men's tennis team advanced four players into the singles main draw quarterfinal round on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
Eight Gators competed in the singles main draw round of 32 with six players winning their respective matches in straight sets. Josh Wardell started the day with a win over FGCU's Alfonzo, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman McClain Kessler was victorious against Fiegel of Georgia Tech, 7-5, 7-5. Elliott Orkin again cruised in his singles match against USF's Dzib, 6-2, 6-3. Morin-Koughoucheff of FAU fell to Diego Hidalgo, 6-2, 6-2. Maxx Lipman defeated Bradley from UNF, 6-2, 6-4 and Chase Perez-Blanco defeated Espindola of UCF. No. 1 overall seed Cid from USF defeated Alfredo Perez in the round of 32, 6-2, 7-6, after the Gator freshman battled back in the second set to force a tiebreak. Senior Gordon Watson fell to Miami's Langmo in a three set match, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
The singles round of 16 proved to be just as exciting for the Gators. The highlight of the round was the ending when Lipman was able to put away Miami's Andrews, 6-2, 7-6 with a 14-12 tiebreak. Orkin was stellar once again with a win over Lomacki of Miami, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Hidalgo defeated FSU's Rinaldi, 6-1, 7-5 and Perez-Blanco was victorious against Bertran of USF, 6-2, 6-2. Kessler fell to the FSU's No. 5 seed Lock, 6-4, 6-3 and Cid of USF defeated another Gator in the round of 16, Wardell, by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Doubles tandems went 1-1 at the Ring Tennis Complex on Saturday. Seniors Hidalgo and Watson were able to take down Garcia and Albo of FSU, 8-7. Juniors Orkin and Lipman fell to Georgia's Montgomery and Reinberg in a marathon match that went to a tiebreak, 8-7 (7).
With one doubles pair and four singles competitors still in the mix, the Gators will continue play on Sunday beginning with the singles main draw quarterfinal match ups.
