GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The senior doubles tandem from the University of Florida men's tennis team won the doubles title at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Monday afternoon.
Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson used straight set victories in two matches to complete their tournament run. The semifinal match pitted the Gators against the No. 1-ranked team in the nation Wagland and Smith from Georgia. The Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders, but Hidalgo and Watson defeated the Georgia tandem, 6-3, 6-4 to move on to the final. The final was a back-and-forth match between the Gators and UNF's Findel-Hawkins and Zuern. The Ospreys' powerful serves kept the match close, but the Gator seniors fought through the match to take the title, 7-5, 6-4.
In singles action, Hidalgo competed against Cid of USF. The Gator fell in straight sets to the Bull, 6-2, 6-3. An All-American last year, Cid defeated four Gators in his final four matches to take the singles title.
With the doubles title, Hidalgo and Watson punched their ticket to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, New York that will be played from November 15th through the 19th.
Up next, the Gators are back on the road next weekend. UF heads to Auburn, Ala., to compete in the SEC Fall Classic.
