Final Qualifying Draw
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Elliott Orkin represented the United States this weekend at the Birmingham Futures, posting a 2-1 record and advancing through to the Qualifying Round of 32.
Orkin's two wins this weekend brought him to a 9-4 record for this season, the third-most amount of singles wins on the team behind Johannes Ingildsen (12) and Jordan Belga (10).
The Gators' captain faced some familiar competition in this branch of the ITF Pro Circuit, seeing both regional and conference rivals. He defeated Germany's Tassilo Schmid in the Round of 128, a former Mississippi State tennis player who currently holds the position of Florida State's Volunteer Assistant Coach. He was later knocked out of the competition in the Round of 32 by eighth-seeded Dominic Cotrone, who had previously played at the University of South Florida.
Orkin and the rest of the Gators will spend the week preparing for their final tournaments of the fall season. While Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen head to New York for the UTSA/ITA National Indoor Championships, their teammates will split off to go to the Dick Vitale Invitational in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. and the SEC Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Quoting Assistant Coach Scott Perelman:
"Elliott had a great opportunity this past weekend to play the Birmingham Future on clay courts. He won two matches and played very well. In the third round he lost a tough three-set match. I saw a lot of positives out of Elliott this weekend and believe he benefited from the experience."
