COLUMBIA, S.C. - After rain in the area forced the contest indoors, the No. 7 University of Florida women's tennis team picked up another Top-10 SEC win on Saturday afternoon defeating No. 8 South Carolina, 4-1. Florida is now the only team in the SEC to be undefeated in conference play at 7-0.
After dropping the doubles point for only the second time this season, the Gators were all business in singles play. Junior Kourtney Keegan was the first off the
court with a quick 6-2, 6-3 win on court four over Hadley Berg. Coming in, Berg was 14-0. Brooke Austin was next off the court with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over No. 67 Caroline Dailey. On court two, Belinda Woolcock pushed the Orange and Blue lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ingrid Gamarra Martin.
In the end, it was sophomore Josie Kuhlman clinching another Top-10 victory for the Florida Gators. The Ponte Vedra native was able to begin her match after Keegan defeated Berg because of limited court space in the USC Field House. Kuhlman defeated Brigit Fallond, 6-2, 6-3 to seal the victory for the Gators.
Up next, Florida plays host to the LSU Tigers and the Texas A&M Aggies in Gators' regular season finale at the Ring Tennis Complex. LSU is up first on Thursday night at 5 p.m. followed by a Saturday contest at 1 p.m. with the Aggies. The match on April 1st will also be Senior Day for Brianna Morgan.
Head Coach Roland Thornqvist
On the Gators' victory over a Top-10 opponent this afternoon…
"We had a battle on the road at South Carolina. After we lost the doubles point for the second time this year, I really liked the way we responded. It was all business. There was no panic and we went out and won three first sets fairly quickly. I like where we are right now. We are really starting to show grit and toughness. We are starting to show that we are the team that can take the pain of physical rallies.
It is the time of year now that we are starting to play outside in the heat and start playing tournament tennis where fitness and toughness is going to make a difference. I am really proud of these guys. They fought hard today against a great South Carolina team. We are looking to heading home and getting two matches at home next weekend and big senior day for our beloved Brianna."
Final Results
#7 Florida 4, #8 South Carolina 1
