Florida will send a strong contingent of returning All-Americans to its first meet of the season
CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Florida track and field program opens its indoor campaign Saturday (Jan. 7) at the Orange & Purple Classic, which will be the first meet on Clemson University Indoor Complex's brand-new banked 200-meter track.
Offseason Review
On the men's side, six Gators who combined for 39 of the team's 49 individual points in last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships victory are back for the Orange and Blue.
Two of them will be in action Saturday.
Junior KeAndre Bates opens his season in the long jump, an event in which he finished fourth at NCAA Indoor Championships and third at NCAA Outdoor Championships a year ago. Kunle Fasasi, who became the fifth UF freshman quarter-miler in history to score at NCAA Outdoors, gets his first run of the year in the 300 meters. Sophomore Ryan Clark (4x100 relay) and Nick Uruburu (indoor 4x400 relay), two other returning NCAA scorers, will open in the 60 meters and 500 meters, respectively. The two, along with Fasasi, will run the 300 meters as well.
UF's women will see five returning NCAA qualifiers compete in the season-opening meet.
For the women, two-time national champion Destinee Gause is back from a redshirt season, starting her return in the 60 meters and 300 meters. Redshirt sophomore Jontavia Dykes and junior All-American Lloydricia Cameron, both of whom enjoyed breakout seasons in the spring, open the year in the weight throw and shot put, respectively. Five-time All-American Darrielle McQueen and three-time All-American Yanis David will make their season debuts in the long jump.
