GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida will be back on the court Oct. 13-17 when they compete in the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships in Atlanta, Ga. The tournament in being hosted by Georgia Tech and matches will be played at the Byers Tennis Complex.
The event begins on Friday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. with the singles qualifying round. Stephen Madonia will open the contest for the Gators at 11 a.m. in the second-round after receiving a first-round bye. Six Gators will open competition on Saturday when the main draw for doubles and singles begins.
Success at the ITA Regional Championship
The Gators have found an abundance of success at the regional championship since 2009, with four doubles championships and a singles crown.
Florida won doubles titles in 2009 and '11, but after a three-year drought the Gators have reasserted themselves as a dominate force on the doubles side with back-to-back championships at the event. In 2015 the pair of Gordon Watson and Diego Hidalgo won the event in Gainesville while Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen took the crown last year at Florida State.
Perez and Ingildsen will not be defending their title this year as they have already earned an automatic bid into the Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships with their championship victory at the ITA All-American Championship back on Oct. 9.
The last singles title the Gators won came back in 2012 when Florent Diep defeated Victor Valente of Georgia State 6-0, 6-3. Since 2009, Florida has advanced a singles athlete to the semifinals in six of the last eight seasons.
