Two Gators and two doubles teams advance
ATHENS, Ga. – All four Gators competing at the 2017 ITA Southeast Regional Championships won their respective opening round singles matches, while a pair of UF doubles teams tasted victory on the first day of play at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the Univ. of Georgia campus.
Brooke Austin and Anna Danilina followed up their opening round wins with impressive triumphs in the round of 32 to advance to Saturday.
Katie Kubicz and Peggy Porter won their first match of the day, but dropped the second, both in tough three-setters.
On the doubles court, the Gator team of Austin and Kubicz opened with an 8-3 victory against FAU's Jemi Aguilar and Naiya Oden, and the UF tandem of Danilina and Porter knocked off FIU's eighth-seeded Andrea Lazaro and Mina Markovic, 8-6.
Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles matches, followed by one round of singles.
Quoting UF Associate Head Coach Dave Balogh:
"It thought it was a pretty good start for us overall. Even though Peggy and Katie had a tough three-set battle in their second round, they both fought hard and competed well.
"Anna and Brooke were very solid in both matches.
"I really like how we're holding onto the ball longer and trying to be more physical out there. Hopefully we can build on this tomorrow."
