PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – UF's Josie Kuhlman posted an impressive straight set win in the opening round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships held at the Riviera Tennis Club on Thursday.
 
The Gator senior downed Ole Miss' No. 17-ranked Arianne Hartono, 6-2, 6-4, and advanced in the main draw where she will play Southern California's No. 14-ranked Gabby Smith on Friday.
 
Brooke Austin and Anna Danilina battled but came up short in their respective initial matches.
 
Austin, who was playing her fourth singles match in three days, fell  to UNC's No. 22-ranked Jessie Aney, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Austin continues action in the consolation draw Friday with a match-up against Oklahoma's No. 19-ranked Lily Miyazaki.
 
Danilina drew fifth-ranked Karla Popovic of California in her opening round bout and fell 6-4, 7-6 (4). Her consolation match on Friday is versus UNC's top-seeded and fourth-ranked Sara Daavettila.

"It was a good day for Josie. She was very solid and business-like out there today.
 
"Unfortunately, it was a rough day for Brooke and Anna. All the credit goes to their opponents, but we didn't play as well as we wanted.
 
"I'm really looking forward to seeing if we can improve our play tomorrow, for sure."

• In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California.
• Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
