Gators Clinch Fifth Straight SEC Series

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—Florida scored seven runs over the final three innings and clinched the series at Alabama with a 13-6 win at Sewell-Thomas Stadium on Saturday night.

Florida (37-14, 18-8 SEC) has won five straight SEC series after Saturday's win over Alabama (19-31, 5-21 SEC). The Gators have won nine league games in a row and 12 of the last 14 in conference play.

A night after winning a 2-1 pitchers' duel, the Gators' offense exploded for 13 runs on 16 hits, including seven extra-base hits. UF batters also drew 10 walks on the night.

Florida scored in the opening frame, taking advantage of a one-out double from Dalton Guthrie. He tagged up and took third on a fly ball and scored on Austin Langworthy's chopper over first base.

Alabama roughed up Gators starter Brady Singer in the first inning to take a 3-1 lead. Three straight, two-out singles plated a pair of runs and a third scored on a wild pitch.

The Gators regained the lead in the third inning. Guthrie led off with a walk and JJ Schwarz doubled to set UF up with a pair of runners in scoring position.

Nelson Maldonado came through with a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3. A sacrifice fly from Jonathan India scored Maldonado and gave Florida the lead.

Mark Kolozsvary made it 5-3 with a RBI double into the left-center gap, scoring Christian Hicks all the way from first.

Singer settled in after the first inning. He recorded seven straight outs via strikeout to open the game before a fly ball to center in the fourth.

Florida added another run in the top of the fifth on Ryan Larson's RBI double.

A leadoff walk came back to hurt Singer in the top of the sixth, as Alabama's Chandler Taylor lifted a ball to deep center for a double to cut the Gators' lead to 6-4.

The Alabama rally continued as Alex Webb doubled down the right field line to score Taylor and make it a one-run game.

Singer got a clutch strikeout and a weak grounder to first, then struck out Chandler Avant on a high fastball to escape the jam.

Florida responded immediately, as Langworthy and Jonathan India led off the seventh with back-to-back singles. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Kolozsvary chopped an infield single to score Langworthy from third.

Deacon Liput laid down a squeeze bunt toward first base and Jonathan India sprinted home from third to make it 8-5.

After a pair of walks, Schwarz blew it open with a two-run single to left field to give Florida a five-run lead.

Singer exited after six innings, allowing five runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts on the night. It was the first time in 13 starts this season that he allowed more than three earned runs.

Liput, who entered the night with a 54-game errorless streak, booted a ball at second to open the bottom of the seventh and Alabama capitalized with a sacrifice fly from Taylor to get one run back but it would not matter.

Ryan Larson extended the Gators' lead in the top of the eighth inning, launching a double to left center that cleared the bases and brought in three runs to make it 13-6.

Nick Horvath pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief and Frank Rubio recorded the final two outs to finish off the victory.

Sunday's series finale will be at 4 p.m. ET on SEC Network.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan
"It was a really good offensive night for us. Larson had a couple big doubles there, Guthrie reached base I think five of his six at bats. JJ continues to swing the bat really well and got a couple hits. Langworthy got three hits, good to see him going again. Kolo reached base every at bat tonight. It was just a really good night offensively. And Hicks has got a [9]-game hitting streak, all-in-all it was a really good offensive night for us.

"The thing with Brady giving up three in the first, I think he was having a little bit of trouble with the mound. But he hung in there. I think his pitch count after three innings was at 58 and he had a seven-pitch fourth inning I believe and got himself right back into his pitch count.

"I'll tell you what, he was put into a very difficult situation there in the sixth with the hit-by-pitch. He had their leadoff hitter Avant in a 3-0 count and he buckled down and that saved the game for us because he came back and struck him out from a 3-0 count. The line may not be as pretty as he wants, but he battled and he got the big strikeout with the bases loaded there. He pitched really efficiently in the fourth and fifth to get his pitch count back to where it needed to be.

"Then Nick came in and did a really nice job. It was good to get Rubio, one of our seniors, on the mound there in the ninth. The last away series in his career and I wanted to make sure he touched the mound.

"It was a good night. Obviously, we've got to finish it off tomorrow. I think we're in first place by ourselves now, so it's fun to be a part of a race like this. That's all you can ask for at this time of the season. We've got four games left and have to take them one at a time and we're in the thick of things. The guys are having fun and playing loose, so we'll see what we can do tomorrow."
