Florida boasts 12 total Eugene qualifiers, and sent four more Gators to Saturday quarterfinals
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Seven more Gators punched their tickets to Eugene for the NCAA Outdoor Championships Friday (May 26) evening at the NCAA East preliminary.
Seniors TJ Holmes and Eric Futch went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles quarterfinal. Holmes, last year's national runner-up, broke the facility record and once again improved his status as the No. 5-ranked 400 hurdler in school history (49.10 seconds). Futch, the reigning national champion, won his heat in 49.26 seconds to ensure an opportunity to defend his title.
Quarter-miler Sharrika Barnett smashed her personal record and entered UF's All-Time Outdoor Top 10 at No. 8. The sophomore's 51.78-second run ranked third among all East Preliminary quarterfinalists, easily earning her a ticket to Eugene.
Sophomore Ryan Clark clinched his second individual NCAA Outdoors appearance in as many seasons, nabbing an automatic berth in the 100 meters with a third-place finish in his heat (10.32 seconds). Andres Arroyo rounded out the men's Eugene qualifiers with an auto berth in the 800 meters.
Fifth-year senior Shayla Sanders also assured herself an NCAA Outdoors spot in the 100. It was close, but the nine-time All-American raced to one of the three at-large berths with a time of 11.45 seconds. Sanders is now a four-time NCAA Outdoors 100 meters qualifier.
In the field, junior Jontavia Dykes secured a second consecutive trip to Eugene in the discus throw. Dykes logged the second-best throw of her career (54.43 meters / 178 feet, 7 inches), finishing eighth overall. Her personal record of 54.53 meters came at last year's NCAA East Preliminary.
The following Gators also collected spots in Saturday's (May 27) third and final round of quarterfinals: Clark (200 meters), Grant Holloway (110 hurdles), Kyra Jefferson (200 meters), and Skylar Ross-Ransom (100 hurdles).
SEC Network +, via Watch ESPN, will provide live streaming Saturday. Links to the broadcast and scheduled broadcast window are below, as are a results table and the Gators' schedule for the final day.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on the Gators' seven Eugene qualifiers Friday…
"Thought we did a great job today. From the first (quarterfinals) group out there, the 400s, with Sharrika Barnett getting through, thought that was a wonderful job. A new PR for her. Ryan Clark did a phenomenal job, as did TJ (Holmes) and Eric (Futch) in the 400 hurdles, Andres (Arroyo). The big star of the day was Jontavia Dykes, right at her PB and a huge seasonal-best. She seems to like the regional meet; she throws very well here every year. Very happy and proud of her."
Holloway on the group of Gators advancing to quarterfinals tomorrow…
"The short-hurdle group did a good job. Skylar (Ross-Ransom) has been working hard to make the last part of her race a little better; she got through seven hurdles and lost her rhythm a little bit. We'll get with her and see if we can get that fixed tomorrow and get her to Eugene. Kyra did a great job, as did Ryan Clark, in the 200."
Holloway on what the Gators need to do looking ahead to tomorrow…
"We've just got to keep moving forward. We have to remember where we are, and that there is no tomorrow if we don't take care of today. We did a great job taking care of today, so now we have to come out tomorrow and take care of tomorrow."
