TEMPE, Ariz. – With the 2017-18 tennis season in full swing, the Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released their preseason rankings. The University of Florida men's tennis team had a great showing in the rankings with six Gators earning ITA preseason honors.
Singles
There are Gators scattered throughout the ITA singles rankings with four individuals earning preseason rankings, tying for the most in the Southeastern Conference. Leading the way for Florida is junior All-American Alfredo Perez, who opens the new year ranked seventh nationally. He ended last season ranked No. 10. Following Perez in the rankings is sophomore Johannes Ingildsen who comes in ranked 59th, up 41 spots from last season's final ranking of 100. Rounding out the preseason singles rankings are McClain Kessler, ranked No. 88, and Chase Perez-Blanco, ranked No. 105.
Doubles
Just like in singles the Gators are well represented in the ITA preseason doubles rankings. Florida is one of only two schools in the SEC to have multiple doubles teams in the preseason rankings. Last year's All-American duo of Perez and Ingildsen, who ended the season ranked sixth, open the new campaign ranked fifth by the ITA. The other pair of Gators ranked in doubles are freshmen, Oliver Crawford and Duarte Vale who are ranked 54th.
Freshmen-Newcomer
For the first time under head coach Bryan Shelton, the Florida men's tennis team has two student-athletes ranked in the ITA Freshmen-Newcomer rankings. Highly touted freshmen Crawford and Vale earned the honor, and are two of only three freshmen ranked from the SEC. The Gators are also the only team with two student-athletes selected to the freshmen-newcomer list.
Coach Shelton on the 2017-18 schedule
"The pre season rankings are really an indication of last years individual results. Our main focus is improving every single day. The results will come as we focus on what is most important and as we respect every practice, workout, match, etc. This team is committed to one another, and we are on a mission to develop and maximize our opportunities."
