Gators Returning to Clemson to Build on Openers
Thursday, January 18, 2018 | Track and Field
Florida posted several marks ranked in the top 20 nationally in its season-opening meet at Clemson
CLEMSON, S.C. โ Florida track and field, ranked No. 1 on the men's side and No. 6 on the women's side of the USTFCCCA Preseason National Team Rankings, heads back to Clemson University for the second time in three weeks. This time around, the Gators will compete Friday and Saturday at the Clemson Invitational.
ย
Florida opened its season at Clemson's Orange & Purple Classic earlier this month (Jan. 6), turning in some impressive performances.
ย
Sophomore Grant Holloway, the reigning NCAA 60-meter hurdles champion and The Bowerman Preseason Watch List member, tied the second-fastest time in the nation (7.69) in the season-opening meet. Fellow hurdler Cory Poole's time of 7.86 from the Orange & Purple Classic is tied for 12th nationally entering this weekend. Both are aiming to lower those season-bests.
ย
Senior KeAndre Bates, who won three NCAA and SEC titles apiece last year to land on The Bowerman Preseason Watch List, opens in the triple jump and looks to rebound from a lackluster opener in the long jump. Bates won the indoor long jump national title, along with the outdoor long jump and triple jump NCAA titles last season, in addition to garnering runner-up honors in the indoor triple jump.
ย
Fellow NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships triple jump qualifier Clayton Brown opens his campaign in that event. The Jamaican will also compete in the long jump for only the second time in his collegiate career.
ย
Also for the men, 2017 USTFCCCA Indoor All-American weight thrower AJ McFarland will attempt to build on his eighth-ranked mark (21.24 meters / 69 feet, 8.25 inches) from two weeks ago.
ย
For the women, senior Lloydricia Cameron's shot put mark from the Orange & Purple Classic (17.32 meters / 56 feet, 10 inches) ranks fourth nationally.
ย
The horizontal jumps duo of Darrielle McQueen and Yanis David, both of whom posted top-six long jump marks two weeks ago, open in the triple jump Saturday. David is the reigning indoor national and SEC runner-up, while McQueen is a two-time indoor All-American in the event.
