Dyson and Calilao Stand Out in Iron Gator Challenge
Thursday, October 4, 2018 | Baseball
The Florida baseball team recently completed its offseason Iron Gator Challenge program as they prep for the start of fall practice.
Team Dyson (62 points) edged out Team Leftwich (60 points) on top of the team standings. Junior Tyler Dyson's team included Felix Garcia, Colton Gordon, Brock Howard, Cole Maye, Hunter McMullen, Kirby McMullen and Garrett Milchin.
Individually, Tyler Dyson (63 points) scored the highest among all pitchers for the second year in a row. Sophomore Tommy Mace (55 points) and freshman David Leuthje (51 points) finished second and third among pitchers.
A pair of newcomers stood out among the position players. Freshman outfielder Kendrick Calilao totaled 75 points to take the top spot while senior Nelson Maldonado and freshman Jacob Young tied for second with 69 points.
The players competed in a series of 11 events and the top 10 players in each event scored points (10 points for first place, nine points for second place, etc.).
Among the four teams, points were awarded for each event based on cumulative scores from the team members. The team that finished first in each event received eight points, second place received six points, third place earned four points and fourth earned two points.
The Gators fall practice schedule begins on Monday. Next week's schedule will be available Friday on FloridaGators.com/baseball.
