WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University Florida men's tennis team had their NCAA Individual Championship come to a close on Saturday as both doubles pairs fell in the elite eight.
Day One Recap | Day Two Recap | Day Three Recap
Alfredo Perez and
Johannes Ingildsen were the first pair on the court for Florida as they took on Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson of Memphis. The match was initially delayed due to rain that pushed the start times of singles back until after 1:30 p.m. also forcing doubles to start late. When their match got underway it was outside and the Gators were in control with a 4-2 lead. But then the weather decided to take a turn for the worse yet again. Rain and lightning forced all matches inside. With the match inside, the Gator pair dropped the first set 7-5 and the second set 6-3 to close out their 2018 season.
McClain Kessler and
Duarte Vale had a tall task in front of them, facing off against Ohio State's Martin Joyce and Mikael Torpegaard, the 25th ranked pair in the country. Kessler and Vale started off slow and fell behind early in the first set. Ohio State was able to hang on for the 6-3 set win before also taking the second set by a score of 6-2.
This season was one to remember for the Gators. On the team side, Florida advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight while in the individual championship the Gators had Perez earn All-America honors in both singles and doubles for the second-straight season. Also earning All-America honors for the second consecutive season in doubles was Ingildsen. Kessler and Vale also earned their first career All-America honors in doubles. Other 2018 awards for Florida include
Oliver Crawford winning the SEC Freshman of the Year award, ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year, being a First Team All-SEC selection and an SEC All-Freshman team honoree. Perez was also a First Team All-SEC performer while Ingildsen was on the second team. Kessler was named to the SEC Community Service Team while also picking up the Southeast Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award and the national Rafael Osuna Award For Sportsmanship.
