Seven Gators advanced in track events, while Avione Allgood stole the Gators' show to open USATF Outdoors
DES MOINES, Iowa – Ten Gators competed Thursday to open the USATF Outdoor Championships, with sixth-year senior javelin thrower Avione Allgood claiming a silver medal and seven others advancing to semifinals.
Allgood, who exhausted her collegiate eligibility following an SEC title and sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier this month, threw a 2-foot, 8-inch season best on the opening throw of the competition. Her mark of 56.54 meters held up for second place through all six rounds, finishing two feet clear of the bronze medalist.
On the track, defending American 400-meter hurdles champion Eric Futch nabbed an automatic spot in the semifinals, but fellow Gators product TJ Holmes, last year's bronze medalist and the fifth-place finisher at the 2017 IAAF World Championships, posted the top overall qualifying time. William Wynne, a two-time All-American for the Gators, secured the final time qualifier for Friday's 400 hurdles semifinals.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Championships gold medalist triple jumper Christian Taylor advanced to the 400 meters semifinals with the second of four time qualifiers. Taylor is entered in Friday's triple jump competition as well.
Following a pair of disqualifications, Calvin Smith, a 2008 Olympian and 18-time All-American for the Gators, wound up with the fourth and final time qualifier for Friday's 400 meters semifinals.
Five-time NCAA champion and 2012 Olympian Jeff Demps clocked the second-fastest wind-legal time of his career (10.02 seconds) to automatically advance to the 100 meters semifinals. Junior Ryan Clark secured the last time qualifier in the same event.
At the Jamaican Senior Championships, sophomore Clayton Brown took bronze in the triple jump, topping out at 16.19 meters.
NBC Sports Gold will have streaming coverage for the final three days, though a paid subscription is required. NBC will have two hours of live television coverage Saturday and Sunday evening.
