Holloway’s School Record Punctuates Gators’ Strong Weekend

Grant Holloway broke Jeff Demps' school record, as the Gators posted nine national top 10s in Fayetteville.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Florida unleashed a slew of impressive performances Saturday at the Razorback Invitational, posting nine times and marks that rank in the top 10 nationally, including a world lead and school record from Grant Holloway.

Holloway, who entered the day fresh off the nation's No. 2-ranked long jump mark, clocked a time of 6.59 seconds in the 60 meters prelims—which would have been the No. 5 time nationally—and followed it up with a world-leading 6.51 seconds.

The Chesapeake, Va., native broke Jeff Demps' seven-year-old school record of 6.52 seconds, and tied the No. 9-ranked performer on the collegiate all-time top 10 list.

Through Florida's first two meets, Holloway holds national leads in the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, along with the No. 2 national marks in the 200 meters and long jump. Entering the weekend, North Dakota State's Payton Otterdahl (shot put; weight throw) was the only other man in the country leading the nation in multiple events.

Junior college transfer Natricia Hooper made her Florida debut in the triple jump, posting the nation's No. 5-ranked mark (13.23 meters / 43 feet, 5 inches). Hooper's mark also ranks sixth on the program's All-Time Indoor Top 10 list.

Also in the triple jump, junior Clayton Brown, the reigning indoor SEC champion, (literally) opened his campaign with the nation's No. 6-ranked mark, bounding all the way to 16.29 meters (53 feet, 5.5 inches) on his first attempt.

The Gators also collected national top 10s from a trio of quarter-milers. Senior Sharrika Barnett took second in the women's 400 meters invitational with a time of 52.81 seconds, good for fifth nationally. Sophomores Benjamin Lobo Vedel and Chantz Sawyers swept the men's 400 invite, logging the nation's No. 7 (46.43) and No. 8 (46.64) times, respectively.

Fellow sophomore Cory Poole notched a personal record and broke a tie for fifth on the school's All-Time Top 10 list in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second with a time of 7.73 seconds. Poole's time ranks tied for seventh nationally as well.

The men's and women's 4x400 relay teams ended Florida's day on a high note. The Gators won the men's race with the team of Lobo Vedel, Holloway, Poole, and Sawyers, improving their No. 2-ranked NCAA time (3:04.45) and becoming the No. 10 team on the program's All-Time Top 10 list.

Florida's women consisted of sophomore Nikki Stephens, sophomore Taylor Manson, freshman Doneisha Anderson, and Barnett. The quartet clocked a time of 3:34.59, strengthening their hold on the No. 6-ranked time in the country.

The Gators' throwers return to action next weekend at Virginia Tech, while the rest of the squad will have a week of training before the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic on Feb. 8-9.
