Women’s tennis knocks off UC Santa Barbara, 4-2.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 11 University of Florida women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2019 dual match season as it defeated UC Santa Barbara, 4-2 in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Saturday afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators dropped the doubles point and the first singles bout, but stormed back to win four-straight singles points and win the match 4-2.
No. 41 Ida Jarlskog and Tsveta Dimitrova teamed up to win their doubles match and each registered singles victories to help push the Gators ahead to the ITA Kick-Off Championship vs. North Carolina State Sunday afternoon.
After Jarlskog, McCartney Kessler and freshman Anastasia Kharitonova all earned victories to put Florida ahead 3-2, the day's result came down to two courts with Dimitrova and freshman Marlee Zein still competing. After winning the first set 6-4, Dimitrova claimed the deciding set in dramatic fashion as the Houston transfer won the tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6) to defeat UCCB's Stephanie Yamada. Dimitrova erased a 4-1 deficit in her second set to seal the Florida win.
Freshman Sydney Berlin fell 6-2, 6-0 to Lise Sentenac to begin singles as UCSB jumped ahead 2-0. No. 29 Kessler then earned a victory (6-1, 7-5) over Elizaveta Volodko to give the Gators their first point of the afternoon. No. 9 Jarlskog and Dominika Paterovai fought back and forth in the opening set but the Georgia Tech transfer, Jarlskog, earned a 7-5 win and followed it up with a 6-0 second set to even the overall tally at 2-2. Freshman Anastasia Kharitonova, playing on court six, put the Gators ahead with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over the Gauchos' Anastasia Goncharova.
Zein, who claimed an impressive 7-6 win in her first set on an 11-9 finish in the tiebreak saw her match suspended after her teammate Dimitrova clinched the UF win on court four.
Florida claimed the day's first doubles match as Dimitrova/Jarlksog cruised to a 6-2 victory over Santa Barbara's Yamada/Volodko. After trailing 3-0, Zein/Kharitonova battled back to tie the score at 3-3, but fell 6-4 to the USCB duo of Paterova/Goncharova. The doubles point was decided on court two where Kessler/Berlin raced out to an early 3-1 edge only to see Lagarde/Sentenac (UCSB) fight back and pull out a win via tiebreak.
Florida will take on North Carolina State Sunday at 2 p.m. ET as the squads meet with an ITA Kick-Off title on the line and a trip to next month's ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle at stake.
Note: There is a chance of inclement weather in the area on Sunday, and this weather may push matches indoors. If matches are pushed indoors, the competition will be without live stream and live stats.

Overall thoughts on team's play…
"I was pleased with how we were able to set aside the doubles loss and begin to compete in singles. One of the things we've talked about in wanting to do better with singles, or in general really, is our play at the end of sets. I thought that on Wednesday, we went away from our game plan in the four-all, five-all tiebreaks. But today you look at the scoreboard and we had five sets that went to four-all and deeper and we won all five. I was really pleased with those two things, how we were able to set aside a doubles loss and be much more clinical in our play at the end of sets."
On the team's doubles performance and the team gaining experience…
"I think we are going to be really good in doubles and I think we are going to have plenty of opportunity to win the point. It's easy for a young team like this to get down in the dumpster after you lose the doubles point, but I thought we did really well and competed hard in singles. At times I think we played at a really high level but we did have a period where we made too many errors and let their players back in the match. But I think with some more experience and more time on the court, I'm hoping that we can make those windows of spells where we are not playing at a high level less and less and shorter and shorter."
On taking on N.C. State on Sunday…
"We don't know much about them, I think we have seen a couple of their players only. You know we are going to approach this like we do any other competition and it's going to be about the Gators. We are going to try to be the best we can be tomorrow and then we will make adjustments when the balls are in the air."
