FORT MYERS, Fla. – After dropping her opening set, University of Florida women's tennis sophomore
Sydney Berlin battled back to win the second and force a tiebreak, but her comeback bid came up just short as she fell 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 in the Flight B championship match Sunday morning at the Bedford Cup on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University.
The second-year Gator, who hadn't dropped a set in her first three matches of the tournament, mounted a strong defense after falling behind early, but FAU junior Louie McClelland held on to claim the victory in the finale.
Seeing her first action of the fall this weekend, Berlin finished the tournament with a 3-1 mark in singles. For her exemplary competition on the court, Berlin was awarded a sportsmanship award from the Bedford Cup tournament directors.
Teammate
Tsveta Dimitrova was also active on the day as she appeared in the Flight A consolation finale. Dimitrova played her opponent tough, but dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to FAU freshman Radka Buzkova.
Dimitrova finished 2-2 in her fall debut.
The two UF entries combined to register a 5-3 record in singles and 2-1 mark in doubles play, taking on opponents from FAU, UCF, USF, FIU, UNF, FGCU and Stetson over the three day event.
