TULSA, Okla. – Despite mother nature forcing matches to be relocated inside, the Gators still managed to take care of some business on the opening day of main draw action at the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday, as
Oliver Crawford and
Sam Riffice picked up first round singles wins, while
Johannes Ingildsen and
Brian Berdusco move on to the round of 16 of doubles competition in Tulsa. Despite the singles victories, Riffice and Crawford would drop a tight match to Illinois' No. 19 ranked doubles pair in the first round, while
Lukas Greif's run in Tulsa would also end unfortunately at the hands of the draw's No. 8 seed. Â
Â
Singles matches started the morning off smooth before matches were moved inside midway due to rain at the Michael D. Case Center on the campus of Tulsa University.
Â
No. 10
Sam Riffice, a No. 6 seed, would ring in the first singles victory for Florida, dropping Notre Dame's No. 43 Richard Ciamarra in the first set, 6-3, before finishing his first round matchup inside with a 7-6 (3) effort in the second. The victory serves as Riffice's first ranked win of the fall slate, as he will go on to face South Alabama's No. 124 Loic Cloes in Thursday's second round.
Â
On the other side of the main singles draw, No. 70
Lukas Greif faced a tough matchup in the draw's No. 8 seed, No. 13 Juan Carlos Aguilar of Texas A&M. Greif would hang around early on before Aguilar began to heat up, going on to take the first set, 6-3, before continuing to deliver in the second with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-2, decision. The loss cuts Greif's five-match fall win streak to an end, after picking up three consecutive to qualify. Lukas will match up with Oklahoma State's Emile Hudd in the first round of consolation singles on Wednesday.
Â
No. 3
Oliver Crawford would take the first set, 6-3, in his first round matchup with St. John's Aditya Vashistha before the match was put on hold due to the rain. After waiting inside for prior matches to finish, Crawford and Vashistha eventually returned to play, as Vashistha went on to return the favor in the second set, 6-3. The third set was all Crawford, as the No. 2 seed then blanked Vashistha, 6-0, to secure the first round victory in Tulsa.
Â
Crawford moves on for an early taste of SEC competition in Alabama's No. 42 Edson Ortiz in Wednesday's second round. Â
Â
After a long afternoon of catching up both men's and women's singles matches in Tulsa, No. 4 ranked
Johannes Ingildsen and
Brian Berdusco eventually took the court in the first round of doubles action against Radford's Rodrigo Magahaels and Yeven Sirous. Radford's duo put up a strong fight throughout the match, though, Ingildsen and Berdusco, the draw's No. 3 seed, would manage to hold off the pair, 7-5, 7-5, to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships.
Ingildsen and Berdusco will meet TCU's No. 22 Jacob Fearnley and Alastair Gray in Wednesday round of 16.Â
Â
Shortly after, No. 49 Riffice and Crawford followed up on the same court, facing a challenge in Illinois' No. 19 Alex Brown and Aleks Kovacevic. Riffice and Crawford dropped a competitive first set to the Illini, 7-5, before Brown and Kovacevic would open a 4-1 lead in the second set. The Gators then took two straight games, though, the Illini duo managed to finish Riffice and Crawford, 6-4, to advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals.
Riffice and Crawford will see Northwestern's No.10 Simen Bratholm and Nick Brookes in the first round of doubles consolation on Wednesday.
