Kessler’s Comeback Falls Short at ITA Fall Nationals

Women's tennis junior McCartney Kessler battles, but drops decision at  nationally-competitive tournament.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – University of Florida women's tennis junior McCartney Kessler saw her six-match winning streak come to a close after dropping a highly-contested matchup to Texas' Lexi Ryngler Wednesday evening in the first round of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

No. 23 Kessler, who had won 12-consecutive sets entering the tourney, fought hard to force a third frame but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to the Longhorn freshman and California native, Ryngler.

After falling in the opening set, and trailing midway through the second, Kessler stormed back to claim the stanza with a tiebreaking victory. Harnessing the momentum, Kessler traded games with Ryngler at the beginning of the third, but her comeback would come up just short.

Florida's standout junior will resume play tomorrow Thursday, Nov. 7 in the consolation round where she will take on Hawaii's Bojana Markovic, a top 100 player.
